alanas:  I had a cushion in the past. The cut is much like the round brilliant – splintery facets. The cushion moissy looks absolutely nothing like a cushion cut diamond, but it is really pretty. Cushion cut diamonds should look like crushed ice, where moissy looks kind of flat in that cut I guess? I traded for an OEC because it’s got chunky facets and is much more diamond-like IMO.

alanas:  They are both moissy. I was demonstrating the difference in cuts. The first cut is the moissy cushion, which is splitery and not-like a diamond cushion cut stone at all, IMO. The second is of an OEC moissy – which I think the cut is much more diamond like. OECs can give off pastel flashes of color like shown in my pictures, but I’m sure moissy gives off more color and less white light return.

alanas:  Thanks, yes they are both forever brilliants. Both are 6.5mm, but the cushion was considered 1.4ct while my round (OEC) faces up the same but is considered 1ct. The cushion was set in palladium and the OEC is set in white gold, which I think there is a noticable color difference in the metals as well. The first ring (cushion) was from moissaniteco.com and the second ring was custom made at Schubachs.

I think it can pass to most people.  Moissy is moody though, and a bit warmer.  Some times it will be  white, some times you will see tint.  But as mentioned above, if a diamond is not a financial reality for you right now, people will probably question a 2ct rock on your finger.  If you want to pass it off, I would get a more normal size, like 1ct.  Or I would just be honest about what it is.

Cushion cut moissy is actually a great cut though, I love it!  As well as ovals.  “crushed ice” in diamonds is not ideal.  It is a cut that is done to save on ct weight, not maximize performance.  Or in the case of FCD, enhance colour.

alanas:  The FB moissanite can be moody, especially with the fancy cuts. I know my Radiant cut can be moody in certain lights but most of the time it looks nice and white (and let’s be honest, no-one is looking at it as close as we are, except maybe for our jewellers!). But it’s not heavily noticeable in my opinion.
