So, I bought a dress from China already. Bad experience, but I had asked them to custom make a dress from picture, maybe that is where I went wrong? The dress was too small in the bust and really too big in the hips though I sent them specific measurements. Didn’t look at all like the dress I was trying to copy. Though I didn’t care for the cheaply done embellishments they put on it, I will admit that the fabric was decent and the stitching seemed strong. Anyway, tried to get my money back and return the dress since they had a decent return policy. No such luck, turns out that the particular company I bought from really doesn’t care that they have a policy and I am stuck with that dress. Oh well, right? Maybe I could sell it cheap and get a little of my loss back.
So here I am starting over. I haven’t lost faith in the China market simply because I have seen some of the dresses from satisfied customers and they look pretty good and I still have some time. I have read many reviews on different Chinese manufacturers and the results are about 50/50. There are some happy endings and some not so happy endings on the subject.
I realize it is a big gamble to try this route again, some of the advice I have read is to look for a simple dress. The only things I am super picky about is that I want a v neck with straps and some ruching across the tummy area. Unfortunately these elements are hard to track down because I have tried dresses on at every bridal shop in a 50 mile radius and only one had a dress that was even close but the price tag was out range.
What do you all think of this dress? Is it simple enough? Do I dare put the order in? I figure if I spent the $150 on this I would certainly be able to afford a few alterations. And since it is a dress they offer, I would imagine that they have a pattern and have made this one before rather than trying to copy something from a picture.

Well 150 isn’t really that expensive so if it didn’t work out again it wouldn’t be a huge loss. I’ve heard that simple dresses are usually easier to replicate, so I think your chances of success are a bit greater with this dress… especially if it’s one that they have done before. If this doesn’t work out will you have enough time to purchase another dress?? That would be my biggest concern.

I think you’re making a big gamble. I don’t know when you’re getting married but if this second dress doesn’t make you happy then will you have to buy a 3rd? I think you’re better off searching for a used dress- one that is your style and won’t require expensive alterations. Good luck!

Wow, only 150 for that, huh? Well, if the reviews are 50/50 – then that’s your shot of having a good chance of getting that dress to your liking. That means you have a 50/50 shot of losing out on 150. And that will be 300 (so far) out of a budget that could’ve been created for a dress bought here. (hope that didn’t come across rude – I’m trying to be factual, not opinioniated )
So, those are the options that need to be weighed out. If you feel good about all of it – and the end result will make you beyond happy (that’s worth all the effort you’ve put into finding the perfect dress) – then its a definite. 🙂
Its your day, do what makes you happy!

Where are you offer this dress?I am a Chinese and we have a factory in China,as you said our products are copies but our products are not too bad. There are also many customers love our dresses.

You have already spent money on one dress and it didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to. I would not chance it again. The dress you posted should be pretty easy to make. I suggest finding a seamstress in your area and ask her to make it for you. You will save yourself a lot of headache, tears, and money, if you do. JMHO

why not go to davids bridal they have very reasonable prices and even have some gowns for the same price that you are willing to pay for your replica. I would not make the same mistake twice

Depends – where are you buying from? I got my dress from China and was 100% happy with it!
Some replica sellers have much higher satisfaction ratings than others. I researched and found one with thousands (yes, thousands) of positive reviews, and felt pretty safe about it.
I have a loooong post that I wrote about it back when I bought my dress, if you PM me I can find the link for you.

I have been to DB, the store I was at was very unhelpful. After it took over an hour to try on 3 dresses (none of which were on the list I brought them because they didn’t have any of those in stock) because my salesgirl kept disappearing, I walked out (which is behavior that I don’t usually indulge in, I am usually patient to a fault with people).
So, hopefully good news, my Aunt knows a lady in Delaware that has made dresses in the past and is toying with the idea of making them and selling them online. She is in the process of emailing her to find out what kind of prices she charges and if she is interested in doing a dress for me. I’m keeping my fingers crossed! A nice lady in Delaware who has a conscience to do a good job and is not rushed should be able to a nicer job than some guy in a sweatshop in China with inferior materials, so I should hope.
Prayers for me that she won’t be asking an arm and a leg, I told my Aunt that my absolute maximum is $400 (I know it is not much for a handmade dress but I am already soaked for $150 on the dud dress and I may still need alterations when all said and done).
If this doesn’t work out I may have to try China again…..let’s hope not. And if all goes well I may have a contact for others out there in the same boat as me;)
