So the other week I went on a small foundation hunt. I realize I’m about 4 months out from my wedding, so I do have time. I just really wanted to make sure that I was comfortable with the color, application, and whole makeup look well ahead of time. I also wanted to make sure that any breakouts would be completely healed if I had to try a few different foundations before finding my holy grail… (I’ve had some nasty breakouts from foundations before, not fun!)
Well, I was completely convinced that I wanted to try the Makeup Forever HD foundation. It really seemed like the best option for a wedding foundation. I walked right into Sephora and over to the MUFE section, played with a few bottles, hoping that an associate would come and offer to help. No one did… I started looking around and all the associates were standing around BSing with each other. So I stood there frustrated for a few minutes staring at them… I hate poor customer service, especially when a store isn’t busy at all. So I left. I decided screw it, I’ll try MAC. As soon as I walked into the MAC store a nice young girl asked if she could help me. YYYEEESSS!!! I explained to her everything I wanted and how my skin was and she matched me with a foundation and powder to touch up my t-zone. It looked fine in the store, and it even looked fine when I got home and tried to apply it myself in my vanity mirror… But something bugged me… The color it left behind on the back of my hand was just nowhere near the shade my skin. I know it’s not supposed to match my hand, but it was super pink. So I kept trying it and something was just off the more I looked at it. So I applied it to half my face, went outside with a hand mirror and yuck…. It just doesn’t match. I did some research on the NC/NW and found that I had been matched with an NW in the foundation (and an NC for the powder, weird?), which is for pink undertones. I’m Italian, and I have very yellow skin. I can’t use most self-tanners because my skin will turn alien-like yellow. While the foundation looks pretty on, and the color may be right, the undertone is waaay off. It just doesn’t blend into my neck and chest. Like, when I look at my face, it looks fine but as soon as you look at the whole picture, the problem is obvious…
I’m a little frustrated… It’s my own fault for not doing my research ahead of time and not taking the foundation for a test drive before buying… At least MAC has a good return policy, because this will be going back. I hate returning things, but for a makeup that is on the pricier side, it should atleast match my skin.
I’m thinking of just going back to Sephora and flagging someone down to match my color in MUFE and then just getting a sample first so I can try it for a while.
Please ease my mind and tell me I’m not the only one who has had this happen? I want to know your makeup store stories!
