Our LO was just diagnosed with FPIES (food protein induced enterocolitis syndrome), which is basically a rare form of food allergies that often causes a delayed reaction with profuse vomiting and/or mucous and bloody stools. The good news about FPIES is that he will most likely outgrow his allergies, although at this point any food could potentially send him into shock until we know his triggers and he outgrows them.
We suspected DS had food allergies via my breastmilk from the start, along with GERD. I have been on an elimination diet from the TOP 8 most common allergens since he was 2 months, and now have eliminated rice and oats when he turned 6 months. The official FPIES diagnosis came after we trialed rice at 6 months, which he reacted to with non-stop vomiting, mucous and bloody stool. Since eliminating rice/oats, DS is almost an entirely different baby (less fussy, less vomiting, sleeping better) and improving everyday. We are now avoiding all solids at least until our consult with the pediatric allergist at CHOP, one of the top FPIES treatment centers in the country.
Have any other families/babies on WB dealt with FPIES? I’d love to hear from you!
