Our photographer offered to give us a free engagement session WITH a free 16 X 20 canvas. I told her that we hadn’t budgeted for an engagement session because it is (honestly) at the bottom of our must haves. That is when she replied back offering free engagement session. This is very nice of her but I feel bad getting something for free. Should I give her a tip based on how much she charges for an engagement session or something? Don’t get me wrong I love free stuff just as much as the next person. However I kind of feel like a mooch or something. I know I am going to feel bad the whole time, like she is doing something for us and we aren’t doing anything in return.
Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

They usually add that on with the package, also they are probably going to charge you for the prints if you order some so they will make some extra cash there.

Don’t feel bad. She wouldn’t have offered it if she didn’t WANT to do it. As photographers, we often like to use engagement sessions to get to know our clients before the wedding. It makes them more comfortable in front of our cameras on the actual wedding day and more confident in the quality of the product they are going to receive. When you look at it this way, it doesn’t seem like she is getting NOTHING out of it does it? 🙂 I think it was nice of her.

I think since you will wind up having to pay for the pictures she is taking, it isn’t technically free, or it could come as part of the package, but if you feel like you should give her a tip, then I would go ahead and do it. It is all on what makes you comfortable about it.

Our photog offered a “free” engagement session as well. Then when we were going over the contract we discovered that a disc of e-session images was $450 so it really wasn’t free. I mean what’s the point of taking pictures and then only getting 72 dpi images?
