As some of you may remember, I was kind of bummed when I found out that NY state doesn’t let you change your middle name or add a middle name. However, when I went to the DMV and Social security office today, I got to move my maiden name to a middle name (even though it is not on my marriage certificate)!! 🙂 My name is now myFirst myMiddle MyLast HisLast.
Here is how it happened: Go to the social security office and they asked what would you like your name to be? (after chatting about kayaks with the office guard) I’m thinking well I would like my name to be myFirst myMiddle MyLast HisLast so that is what she put. I go to the DMV and fill out the paper work to change my name and put the same information on the forms. The DMV woman didn’t even bat an eye, even though she had a copy of the marriage certificate without my last name as the name change!
Lessons learned: 1) Go to the offices in the morning not on a Monday or Friday 2) Be cheery and friendly 3) Fill out the forms as you would like for them to be.

Thank you! I have been all over the internet and weddingbee, trying to figure out how social security determines your name based on the marriage license (our marriage license only has previous names, not names post-wedding). It sounds like, if my luck follows yours, I should not have a problem!
Thanks again and congrats on your recent marriage (and successful name change)!

In NC you’re marriage license has nothing to do with your name change – only serves as a proof of reason to allow you to do it. You go to the SS Office and fill out the form with how ever you want your new name to be. So glad you figured your situation out but I had no idea it was so difficult elsewhere!

Thanks Ladies! The name change game is crazy and definitely varies from state to state.

In CO the SSA was the same way. You go there with the marriage license and they change your name how you want. Some states want you to go to the DMV first though so I would check with your individual state.

Florida is the same process. Just go into the SS office. They will ask how you want your name to be shown. You will verify it and be on your way.
BTW, they said my new SS card would take 2 weeks to get here and I got it in about a week.
