My Fiance and I moved to NYC this August for his grad school program, and I am currently freelancing for my old job long-distance while I look for new jobs. It was wonderful of them to let me telecommute, but… Well, there’s always a but, eh?
Anyway, my old boss is very busy, was always very busy, and I was worried this would happen… And it did. She’s gotten behind in submitting my invoices. I have only been paid ONCE since we moved here almost two months ago, and I’m supposed to be getting paid every two weeks! I am freaking out, I don’t even have enough money to buy groceries. There’s a week-long turnaround on payment after an invoice was submitted… I just found out she hasn’t submitted anything yet so I know it’ll be at least another week before I get paid.
Wasn’t sure which board to post this to… Hope it’s okay here!

Wow!! I totally could have just posted this. I know exactly what you are going through. I am a freelance writer and I have been contributing weekly articles to a newspaper where I used to work full time. Well, it has been two weeks since my direct deposit was supposed to go into my account. Still not there. I literally have 3 bucks in my account. Thank god for my Fiance, or I would be going hungry for a few days until I get paid from my regular job. Fortunately my bills are paid at least. I still have no clue when I will be getting the money. My editor has been telling me for two weeks, “it should be there in a few days.”
I feel your pain. 🙁

I totally thought the freelance life was for me, but the instability is freaking me out! Not knowing when my next assignment will come, or when I’ll get paid, is too scary when I’m the only one making money. Luckily, my Fiance has some student loans, but with all our bills, that money is running out fast (plus, of course, we have to pay it back eventually). Hopefully this situation rectifies itself soon!

Yeah good luck, girlie!! Freelance is definitely tough. Luckily it’s not my only income, but we just bought a house and the supplemental part is definitely helpful. I am looking for better employment though, so I won’t have to count on freelance AT ALL….that’ll be the day.
Hope things work out!
