No it’s not a nightmare, it’s actually a great thing. A friend of ours offered to photo our wedding as well as do so informal pics before. He’s done several of our friend’s weddings and they’ve turned out awesome and he used to do wedding photography for a living (he’s moved into more artistic pics now).
What I want to know is we’re looking at having for 5 hours and I want to make sure that he is paid fairly for his work, so about how much should I expect it to cost? It seems that all the estimates are between $800 and $15,000. That’s a pretty big stretch. We’re in Los Angeles so I know that makes it more expensive. Anyone have an idea? I don’t want to rip him off or sell his talents short.

@renwoman: First, done well, wedding photos are the most “artistic” types of pictures you can take IMO. Commercial pays better, and family is less work. I’d find out why he’s leaving the genra? Does he not like dealing with brides anymore? I’d find that worrisome.
As for payment, the most courteous thing to do would be to ask him what he charges. He’ll most likely tell you what it’s worth to him to shoot it AND be inclined to give you his lowest price because you’re a friend. If he says “nothing,” I’d consider giving him tip of $500 just to cover a little of his time and costs, and be VERY VERY grateful he’s such an awesome friend!

@renwoman: That’s so great!
i do agree with passionatephotolady above. Does he have a website where you can see what he normally charges for any kind of portrait sessions? I would simply ask him how you can compensate him.
$15,000 is definitely on the very high side and what you can expect to pay the best of the best in the industry like Jose Villa. Caroline Tran runs around $8K-$13K depending on the package and hours and she is super amazing. They are both in the LA area and have been published in every single wedding magazine you can think of. You can expect to pay ~$5K for VERY excellent photographers in your area as well. It just really depends on your preferences and photography style you like!

@renwoman: Here in NY photography is also very expensive. Our in-demand photorapher charges $4,000 for 8 hours and an asssitant and a few hundres more for a second shooter.
The other high-end photographers in our area with lots of experience (and who book up 18 months in advance because everyone wants them!) charge $6,000-$9,000 if that helps you gain perspective.
