So, this EXACT thing happened to me. I have been wanting a yellow gold round solitaire (6 prong) set. It was my dream ring. SO s friend proposed to his gf of yr w a similar ring. I was so jealous. I’m sad to say that. I even ranted to my brother and BFF and SO. LOL!
Well months later we went and on a random whim tried on rings (on the right hand ofc) and guess what? I really didn’t like solitaires on my fingers. I always went for simple jewellery and even my promise ring is a simple band. I instead loved the more intricate designs.
I would recommend trying on rings to see what you like. Go alone or with a friend if you like.

Don’t feel bad. I went through something similar.
I held onto a ring for one of my friends for a few weeks because her now fiance didn’t want her to find it in their apartment. When I was engaged previously, I had an asscher in a micropave halo. My friend’s ring is an emerald cut in a pave setting, which is also one of my favorite cuts. I used to just stare at her ring because, like what you said, it was my dream ring and it was a bit weird to see my dream ring in the flesh.
I am so happy for my friend because she is so thrilled with the ring, and what’s funny is that she fell in love with emerald cuts when she saw my asscher ring.
Your time will come, just like mine will.

Bees, how do I tag specific people in my responses? 🙂
Thank you ALL again for your input, I definitely feel better knowing a lot of you went through a similar thing. To be honest, I’ve been dying to try on different rings ever since our friends got engaged just to know if The Dream would actually look like I imagine on my finger. I can’t risk going into jewelery stores in my home town by myself though in case someone sees me and informs my SO I’m casually shopping for engagement rings LOL Sooooo I’m just gonna have to wait until we are doing it together or I’m away somewhere 😉
