You can still get engaged, and just tell close family and friends. Then you can make it public on facebook the next week or something. I personally think the engaged couple gets a week to be showered with attention and well wishes, and then you can announce yours.

@gramgeek: Since you already know, perhaps you should suggest to your Fiance that he holds off a couple of days :/

My friend got engaged over the weekend.  Her and her SO have been together a little over a year.  Well….her younger sister got engaged to her SO of 6 years the weekend before. My friends SO was adamant to not change his plans because of the sister.  So just roll with it.  Hopefully you wont want similar dates.

Yours will still be special. Your friends will still go nuts for you, and you each have your own friends and family who will be surprised and happy. She’ll be pumped to have someone to talk about planning with 🙂 Personally, over Christmas about 3 of my friends got engaged and they all got lots of attention and congratulations… I wouldn’t worry. Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

@gramgeek: you are not being ridiculous for worrying, some friends would be offended that you might seem to ‘steal their thunder’. I think it is considerate of you to worry, but don’t ask your Fiance to hold off because of your friend. Just wait a few days before putting it up on facebook. How exciting!

I definitely would not ask your SO to wait. Let him ask when he feels like the moment is just right! Don’t post it right away to Facebook, though…We waited nearly a week before we announced our engagement there. We used that time in between to personally tell our family and close friends the good news. (We also asked everyone to not mention it on Facebook until we made the official announcement.) It will be much more special to those you two are closest to if they hear it from you guys rather than seeing it on Facebook. Then, next week post that e-ring photo, change your status, and get ready for all the wall comments!! That will give her some time to shine and give you an opportunity to make it more special for your family and close friends.

Oh and CONGRATS!!

@gramgeek: i’m sorry, but your friend announcing their engagement will not change how people react to yours.  for example, if a random friend announced they are engaged and a few days later my best friend is engaged, i’m still more excited for my best friend.  so the people who matter will definitely will consider your engagement as special as you think it is.

It’s often a good idea to tell family and friends your news first, then post on facebook. Most people I know get really upset if they find out about the engagement on FB rather than a phone call or email!

I don’t think your SO should plan your engagement around your friend’s. People will still be happy for you! I agree with others that maybe you could just wait to post on FB.
