My good friend, in lieu a gift, offered to make my wedding cake. I jumped all over that! But… My family is a little upset, what if it turns out bad, doesn’t taste great, etc… Personally I don’t care. In my eyes, anything she does will be stunning. I can see past imperfection. But is it fair that I make my guests do it to?

My friend made my wedding cake and it turned out so beautiful and delicious! She had us come over and do a cake tasting wish so many different kinds. She even made two different buttercream icings for us to choose.
I should note that my friend makes cakes on the sides so that’s why I had her do it. Unfortunately, bakery or not, you can’t always guarantee things will turn out the way you want. You can only hope – regardless if it’s a friend or well known bakery. Anyways, have a cake tasting and see what can whip up for you! Ask a ton of questions and act as if you would with anyone else helping out with your wedding. =)

Is shes known for her baking/decorating? I definitely think you can work with her and pick something within her skill level, using techniques she’s done before. Many people have sheet cakes and one part of the layer to cut, so that may be a great option if she is not used to making tiered cakes. Basically, try to make it as foolproof as possible!
If you parents are concerned, you can always have a groom’s cake on the side too.

I prefer homemade wedding cakes to store bought and I would not be disappointed or feel cheated to have one. I have had terrible, expensive bakery made cakes thay tasted like oil and sawdust so even using a bakery does not guarantee a good wedding cake.

Even though you’re having a friend do it, having a cake tasting might still be a good idea. So she can figure out what you like and you can assure your family that it will be delicious. As for how it looks, as long as it’s perfect for you it shouldn’t matter what the guests think. 🙂

A family friend made our cake and it was a hit. She’s a foodie, but this was her first wedding cake and it was amazing (I think!)

Do a cake tasting. Ive never gone to a wedding before for the cake, so to be honest if the cake was gross I wouldn’t really care. I care more if my actual dinner is gross.
