This has happened a lot in the Philly/NJ area over the past couple of years with bridal shops. In fact, a whole popular venue closed and took people’s money in Philly. I’m not even sure if it’s resolved yet. Good luck to your friend. I hope she gets this resolved soon.

She needs to file a complaint with the BBB. A police report with the department in that jurisdiction. Also, she needs to dispute the charges with her bank showing evidence that the business has closed, she has not received her dress, and whatever evidence she has they were a scam, including the BBB report and the police report. Hopefully the bank will refund her, though it could take many weeks.

Checks are just paper forms of debit cards. I dont see why it would be treated differently. It will depend on the bank. Her bank will still be able to see where the check was cashed. If it was a bank account, they should be able to work with that bank to get it figurred out. Doesnt hurt to try…. and nag. 😉

I thought that checks were harder/impossible to recoup (like cash) – I mean, without going through something like small claims court.

Credit cards have a system for disputing charges over a certain amount, and you can usually get your money back that way.

This happened a couple years ago in St. Louis too.

I hope your friend can get her money back.
