I am 10 weeks 1 day today, and for pretty much all of my pregnancy I have been horribly constipated. It got even worse when I started taking zofran at 6 weeks for terrible nausea. I also started having some bleeding from my cervix from straining so hard to try and go, so I finally broke down and did an enema approximately a week ago. This last Thursday (4 days after doing the enema) I still had not had a bowel movement again, despite taking 2 colace and a capful of mirilax daily, so this time I tried a glycerine suppository and had good results from that. Well on Friday (the very next day) I had an exam for med school, so I drank some coffee that morning and had a GREAT bowel movement after that, I chalked it up to coffee always helping me to go before I was pregnant and being nervous for my test.
All throughout the weekend up until this morning still, I have continued to have loose stools that I am passing about every time I go to the bathroom (not even kidding). It is not diarrhea by any means, but over the weekend I did kind of have that “yucky tummy” feeling, and not the usual morning sickness. The feeling you get when you ate something that doesn’t agree with your stomach and causes you to have loose/sour stools.
Also, on Friday, my morning sickness wasn’t that bad so I didn’t end up taking a Zofran all day. On Saturday, it was back pretty bad so I ended up taking 3 that day, but still continued to have loose stools. Morning sickness was mild again yesterday (Sunday) so didn’t take any zofran again and haven’t taken any as of this morning (Monday). I did eat greasy fast food Friday night and Saturday afternoon, so maybe that was contributing, but I don’t know why I would continue to have loose stools through this morning. I took all my stool softeners on Friday, but I haven’t taken any since then.
Anyways, my main point here is I am worried this is a signal that something is wrong. Loose stools combined with way decreased morning sickness and increased cramps has me worried. I always got loose stools like this before and during the start of my periods, it was a tell-tale sign that I knew AF was coming. It has to do with increased prostaglandins that your body pumps out to tell the uterus to contract to help get rid of the lining during a period. Now I am just terrified that maybe my body is doing this for my pregnancy right now…increasing prostaglandins to tell the uterus to contract and expel it’s contents. I haven’t had any bleeding or spotting for almost a week now, but the fact that I am having pretty sharp cramps has me worried. I keep trying to tell myself it is just from everything growing and stretching down there, but the continuance of loose stools adds to my worries.
So has this ever happened to any of you pregnant bees out there? Going from severe constipation to loose stools (maybe they are “normal” soft stools, but I struggled with constipation even before pregnancy so they just seem atypical for me I guess)? I know I shouldn’t worry unless I am also spotting/bleeding, but I find myself obsessively checking for that every time I go to the bathroom and then some. My next OB appointment is a week and a day from now, which will seem like a lifetime if this loose stools/cramping continues. Jeez louise, if it isn’t one thing in pregnancy it’s the other I guess, and I hate that I am such a worry wart!

That actually happened to me early on, too. My bowels were very unpredictable for much of the first trimester, but it seems to have evened itself out now. I think it has to do with the hormones and the prenatal vitamins.

I’m not pregnant but I do have a bowel disorder. I can tell you that some times, if I’ve been constipated for days when I finally have a good poop, I will get loose stool/ diahrrea for a few days after. Because of my Crohn’s I also get horrible intestinal cramps that seriously make me feel like I’m dying at times. My point is that maybe it isn’t your uterus contracting and causing the cramps, maybe it’s your bowel. Just wanted to try to ease your mind a little bit. Hope you and baby are ok!

I actually had the same issue.. I would be ridiculously constipated and then I’d wake up in the morning with a stomach ache and loose stools. I was concerned too and did some research. I found that your stools could have both issues depending on your hormone levels changing. I also started to realize it was more stomach pains that I was mistaking for cramps. If you’re really stressed call the dr and see what they say. Maybe they can get you in earlier for a peace of mind. Btw I am 10 weeks tomorrow so we are probably feeling some similar issues!

I was on zofran for 3 months and was only severely constipated, but a week or two after I stopped, I did have loose stools on-and-off for about 4 days. But, I also wasn’t nauseous anymore and was eating too much junk food, PLUS I drank coffee for the first time in 4 months, and it didn’t make me sick, so I drank it oncee a day for 3 days.
Now I’m back to normal, so I was guessing it was just my body getting used to not taking Zofran/dealing with coffee again/eating junk food.
Yours might be the same?

when i was pregnant at 9 or 10 weeks, i was very very constipated. it was the worst feeling ever!

It doesn’t sound like alarm bells to me (although, I’d probably change my tune if it were me!) but I’d call my dr’s office during business hours if you are really concerned.

I have also been vacillating from constipated to…well…the other extreme. I have always had a sensitive stomach and this pregnancy has not been helping. It gets better when I eat well, so I’ve started drinking a green smoothie everyday to help get some fresh fruit and veggies in my diet, since the thought of having to eat spinach (or anything green really) makes me want to hurl.

Welcome to pregnancy 🙂 I’m 34 weeks and experience stuff like this regularly – totally normal. It has to do with the hormones’ effects on your GI tract.

Haha thank you all for your replies and reassurance! The loose stools are gone as of today and I am not having any more cramping, plus the morning sickness is back, so I am feeling much better today about everything still being ok down there. I seriously just need to learn to relax! Lol. And now of course I would take the “comfortable” bowel movements over constipation and absence of morning sickness over feeling sick as a dog. Grass is always greener on the other side I guess!

Ha, just wait it gets better! 😉 These are normal pregnancy side effects, your body is changing like crazy and hormones are all over the place. My doctor did mention that women who complain about it more tend to take hard pre-natal vitamins compared to the ones who take the gummy ones.

@funkyone8604: This could also be partially due to the iron found in most hard prenatals that isn’t in gummies. I was horribly constipated for most of my pregnancy and then it continued post-partum (which is even worse!!), despite taking stool softeners and not taking pain meds, until I had an “aha” moment and stopped taking the iron-enriched vitamins in favor of gummies. However, all the gummies I’ve found lack calcium, so it could mean adding that in to the mix as a separate supplement.
You could ask you doctor/midwife if you need the extra iron, not all pregnant women do.
Also, as old fashioned as it sounds, I eat a small handfull of prunes nearly every day now and my life is so much nicer in the poo department!
