It’s bizzare that they do that….  Fiance lived in MTL for about 12 years growing up, and his mom, even though she was married in NB, and had lived in Ontario for like 6 years as Mrs. Married Name, when they moved to MTL, she was addressed as Mrs. Maiden Name. She didn’t like it either.

What if you wanted to change your name outside of being married? Like you know how some people just decide to change their name? Is that allowed? Then I would just do a legal name change form, and legally change my name to FI’s last name.

Can you do a name change through probate court?  It might be called something different in Quebec, if it even exists.  I am guessing there is some way to change your legal name, for instances such as adopting a child and changing their surname to yours.  It will cost money, but it might be an option.  Good luck!

I would think that there is some option available.  It is too common all over the world for husbands and wifes to share surnames.

@ForeverYoung: Wow! I never knew this! How strange! I’m not changing my name, but I believe it should be one’s personal decision, not something the government has any say in at all.

I’m really surprised. The spirit of feminism should be that a woman has the right to choose, not that she be forced one way or the other. I’d be very upset if my choice were removed too. Unfortunately I have no helpful advice, just sympathy.

Can you go somewhere else to get married… such as a destination wedding somewhere where the laws allows you to change your name? Then have another ceremony in Quebec using your new legal name?  Like Encore, I’m surprised they took away a woman’s right to choose.

I agree.  I always thought that the Feminist movement allowed a woman the right to choose…I’m sorry.
