That stinks – I know in our contract it was spelled out that we could only upgrade our package, which is why we went with the least expensive option when we signed. Check out your contract and see what it says. Did you tell him that you weren’t currently able to work and ask if there was some wiggle room to help you get the wedding back on budget? I would think that most vendors would be willing to work with you (maybe not downgrading a package level, but perhaps cutting one or two services to save $300), especially when you explain that you didn’t understand that you’d only be able to upgrade you package if you wanted to make changes to the contract.

Well, what he probably means when he says he “can’t” isn’t that he is physically unable to do what you’re asking, but that as a business man, he can’t run his business that way and expect to make a living.  So in this case “can’t” and “won’t” really mean the same thing. 

Sorry, I know it sucks, but I also understand why he has to have his policies and stick to them.
