@futureMrsDonnelly: Haha this is funny. I would reccomend that you remind your cousin of all the danger that is in Northern Mexico right now. There is a travel advisory for all Canadians and Americans to not go into that part of Mexico except for essential services and travel. I know because we just had a Destination Wedding in Cancun. She might reconsider after hearing about how many people have been murdered in the Northern States of Mexico lately…

@MsPanda: It is very scary and unfortunately some people don’t even realize. I think it was only a couple of months ago that an American couple out jet skiing were targeted and the husband was actually shot and killed 🙁

Here is the advisory I recieved:

“Travellers should avoid crossing Mexico’s northern border by land, as shootouts, attacks, and illegal roadblocks may occur at any time. Criminals especially target SUVs and full-size pickup trucks for theft and carjacking along highways of the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Sonora, and Sinaloa. Travellers are advised to reconsider their need to travel by land to or through these border states and should do so only if it is absolutely necessary, and after making appropriate arrangements to ensure their personal safety.”

To the OP, Southern Mexico is still safe to travel to (don’t want to scare you!). We just got back from Cancun/The Mayan Riveria and we had a wonderful time with hardly any issues. These tourist districts are kept pretty safe and we felt comfortable walking around on our own and visiting smaller villages. I hope you enjoy your trip 🙂

@futureMrsDonnelly: Haha I am so sorry! I realized afterward and that’s why I added that last bit. We just got back from our wedding in April there so don’t worry everything is fine in the tourist zones!! The danger is far, far away. We had a wonderful time and never felt in danger. Let me know if you need any info about tours etc. because we just organized 54 guests there. Have fun!

@west.coast.blonde: I was just going to add that the problems were at the border states in the north but you beat me to it. When we were in the Cancun area for our wedding in December we never had any issues.

@futureMrsDonnelly: Where are you getting married? We got married in the same area at Al Cielo hotel and stayed at the Grand Palladium.

@futureMrsDonnelly: *squeel* You are going to love it and you won’t have any issues. If you get a chance head down to Akumal for a day and go snorkeling and have lunch. AMAZING. =)
