The best thing you can do is start saving now! Open a savings account– there are several you can open online that give you a high interest rate (Ally bank is an example) and you can start transferring money in from your checking account. I have some money auto-transferred every month, and its adding up pretty quickly! If you start now before you’re even engaged, you’ll have even more time to save.

If you want an expensive wedding then start figuring out your finances now.

I am from Toronto, Canada we are getting married at a gorgeous venue in Niagara on the Lake in September that is known for its beauty and food.

Our guestlist is 180 people and we are pretty on par with our budget of 45 k Canadian (not including dress, rings or any honeymoon)

It is what we wanted and can affordm however you can do a gorgeous wedding for less than that as well. Lots of factors that go into this..but if you want an fancy elegant wedding with a large guest list.. then yes it will cost alot.. that’s just the reality of it.

Echoing PP’s…start saving now.

We had an elegant wedding with 300 guests and it cost us $160K.  We initially thought we could do it for $80K.  Things add up.

Yes, definitely start saving now.

That being said elegant and budget is subjective. What one person consider elegant would be just average to another. Weddings are a luxury, and like any luxury they’re expensive. Are they necessary? No…you’re just as married if you go to the courthouse as you are if you have a big giant party. It’s all about priorities.

Weddings are ridiculously expensive.

As everyone here I’m sure knows by now, I am doing a tiny, casual thing. 15 total people, no venue, no table/chair/tent rentals, no center pieces, nothing. Well under $100 on my dress and I think my decorating grand total is around $35. 

The day is still going to cost between $2-3k. Photographer for 2.5 hrs is $1k. Catered food and providing drinks will be just north of $800. A friend is officiating but we’ll get her a nice gift, likewise with a friend coming in from out of town. Etc, etc, etc. No matter how many corners we cut, I still end up at about the average cost per guest for my state.

The wedding industry continues to inflate prices because we all keep paying for them. So yes, start saving now. But also evaluate your priorities and see if your dream wedding is really as important to you as you think. Or think about how big your guest list really needs to be. Maybe your dream wedding has 200 guests, but realistically you’d be perfectly happy with 50 or even fewer. Because maybe the sticker shock wears off for some people, but if you genuinely aren’t comfortable spending money that way, I’m not sure anything can make you comfortable.

Of course you don’t need a $10k dress and $7k photographer for an elegant wedding. My wedding was lovely, we had an indoor ceremony overlooking a river, a great photographer, a three course sit down meal and a killer dance party for $20k. Family contributions actually had us spending significantly less than that, but of course that’s not something to rely on. Guest numbers are really the key, we only had 85 but it was a fabulous number as it was definitely enough for a party but we could also interact with every one of our guests. If you’re set on having a plated meal for 300 people then yes, your budget will skyrocket.

Back yard weddings are definitely very popular where I’m from !! Saves lots of $$$  I would have done that if we had a spot but we don’t.  So we are renting a beautiful hall for ceremony ( which will be outside by the water , & reception that will be inside the hall. 

Includes kitchen so we will be buying all the food and hiring a chef to cook it for us. We will be having a roast dinner. 

The hall will be $1300.00 

And we are planning on spending about a $1000 for food. 

Still not sure what to pay the chef yet as we are still looking for one to hire.  

My fiance’s aunty is a photographer so she will be taking pictures. 

We didn’t go all out on decorations basically just table cloths, sashes for the chairs we will be renting from a party shop less then $150.00 

And we’ll only be putting one single rose in a simple vase on each table. 

Still undecided about the alcohol but hoping to make some $$$ back by selling some to the guests lol. Probably will buy about $200 worth of wine for the tables which will be free for everyone. 

The dj is only charging us $200 because he’s a close friend.

khopenyc :  Nope – Lol! My fiance and I were blissfully unaware and totally ignorant about the cost of a wedding when we first started the planning process. I’m super frugal so as the price kept rising to nearly $27,000 (and my meltdowns kept increasing in frequency), we decided to scrap the entire thing. We’re marrying this fall in a short ceremony with 20 people that will cost less than $2k and taking a bomb honeymoon right after, with money to spare and we couldn’t be happier! And our wallet’s happy too!! xoxo

If you’re looking to be engaged within the next few years, OP, I would second a bees comment on here to start saving now, really. It’ll save you sooo much headache when the time comes round!

Agree with everyone here, while you can have an elegant wedding for less, it really depends on your location! The Wedding business is now an industry and some venues will jack up the prices when they hear the word “wedding”… it’s definitely smart to start saving as early as possible and start to figure out what are musts and what you can cut out.. for example, to rent chiavari chairs in my city is about $10 per chair.. so if you have 200 guests that’s $2000 just to rent chairs.. some venue also charge $2 per chair to move from the ceremony location to the reception location.. and that’s $400 just to move the chairs.. so yes things definitely add up quick!

You could have a very elegant wedding for cheaper than them. The #1 thing that makes weddings so expensive is the sheer number of people. It affects what venues you choose, how much food and cake to buy, and pretty much all the rentals. Scale back on that and it won’t be too bad.
