Our front lawn and back yard are a mess, and we have a budget of “about 1% of what a landscape architect would charge us.” So we’re planning to do an overhaul ourselves. So far, my DIY Googling has helped me figure out we want to do a retaining wall on our sloping front lawn, and we have some ideas for the back yard. But we don’t know where to start on the most basic of things: The grass.
Part of the reason we’re going to do a retaining wall is because of all the erosion on our front lawn. So I don’t know where we even start — soil? Leveling? Grass seeds? Do we have to kill all the existing pathetic grass and start from scratch? What does any of that even mean? I don’t even know where to start either with drainage… right plants for the right place… blah blah blah.
Can anybody recommend some excellent sources for DIY landscaping and gardening? I tend to get conflicting advice on things when hunting around for the most basic of concepts… either that, or I don’t understand every 3rd word because I’m such a novice to begin with.
