That’s exactly how we did it.

First off, the damn thing was itchy as hell so I wanted it off the second I put it on, but I wore it throughout the ceremony and then took it off when it was just us two. He put it in his pocket until it came time to do the toss. Then we took a picture with the bouquet and garter “catchers”. We don’t like the tradition of making the guy put it on the girls leg…very awkward.

Not sure if your Fiance is a sports fan, but I keep seeing this idea pop up of doing a football garter toss, which I think would be a lot of fun.  You could put a garter on a football (or any other piece of sports equipment…soccer ball, basketball, hockey stick, etc.) ahead of time, then the groom tosses it to the guys.  It wouldn’t require him to take off the garter in front of people because you could just slip the garter on the ball before the reception and leave it on a table.

@bleusteel:  This is what I want to do! However, we are the last of our friends to get married, so there would be maybe 2 single guys who would go up to catch it LOL

@laceydoilies:  We didn’t do a garter toss, we just included everyone in the bouquet toss (guys, girls, single, married, etc) and gave a prize to the person that caught it.

@laceydoilies: we had all the guys and girls come up…married, single, divorced, everything. Just so happens that 2 single ppl caught the bouquet and garter.

We did an alternative “garter” toss along the lines of @bleusteel:  DH and I met playing softball sooooo instead of a garter my Darling Husband had a softball (fake/stuffed) that he threw.  We also called ALL men for that and ALL ladies for my bouquet toss so as to not single out the “single” people.  And we gave out gift baskets to the winners.
