I have an amethsyt ring and havent heard anything about the size. It’s comparable to the diamond engagement rings I’ve seen in terms of how big the stones are, but most people either think it’s a) really cool that I don’t have a diamond or b) really weird that I don’t have a diamond and that’s all they focus on.

I have a saphire, its a pretty good size, I like the gemstones better, it does get more attention because its different.

@Black-Eyed-Susan: The people who would give a hoot about the smallness of a gemstone are the same ones who think gemstones aren’t real engagement rings. I’ve only met one or two people like this, and I just ignore them. (FTR – I have a .42 carat blue sapphire solitaire. I think it’s about 4mm.)

I’ve never had issues with people in terms of size, but people do notice my ring more because it’s a diamond halo with a sapphire stone. I have yet to receive a negative comment.

My sapphire is 5.5 by 5 mm. I had one person at work rudely say “Is that your engagement ring? How will people know? It’s so small!”
