@rubybride718:  It is so ingrained into our culture (commericals are a big part of this phenomenon) that Diamonds are a symbol of an engagement. While many people have non-Diamond engagement rings and are just as engaged as a person with a Diamond ring, people will still connect engagement automatically with Diamond ring.

I am sorry that people aren’t reacting as enthusiastically as you hoped they might. I imagine that they are still happy for your engagement. Try to remind yourself that the ring is special to you, and think of your fiance’ and let that make you happy when you look at your ring, instead of lingering on other’s opinions of it.

@stephanie760330:  wow, yours is totally stunning! The blue is amazing!

now that I’ve n been married for a year, I don’t think about my ring being none traditional, it just is what it is. People don’t think the rubies are my engagement ring though.

@amandasf:  that’s okay. People’s opinion sometimes is more of a majority opinion. It only takes that 51% to make it the majority. As long as you love your ring and it stands a meaning for you, it’s great! 🙂

I felt the same way you did! I didn’t want a diamond ring initially and picked a smoky quartz ring. I loooooooved it, loved the brown sparkle. It was very much me. But I had to inform people that I was engaged, as this ring wasn’t perceived as an engagement ring by default. Some people did notice and asked if it were an engagement ring (strangers I mean) I was ready to keep it though and just keep informing people of my status if need be.

But the quartz was too soft and got scratched up…so I ended up selecting a diamond ring one year later. I have to say that now, society and its expectations clearly knows I am married. I get reactions all the time, way more than before!

Please be patient and stay true to your taste with your beautiful ruby!! If I saw it irl I totally would know you’re engaged 😉

rubybride718:  lovely, clean and elegant ring.

I have a pink diamond solitare .62pts in yellow gold, however I love it I think it’s to plane for me so hardy wear it. But I have a lovely blue topaz ring that’s big and chunky for my fat hands which I wear 95% of the time. People comment that it’s nice or pretty but not what they would see as an e.ring. I am quirky so wanted a ring to match. I love it and it stands out at work as the other two ladies in my work place that are engaged both have a diamond solitare in White gold which look very similar to each others x

I know what you’re going through. I am newly engaged (2.5 weeks) and my fiance proposed with a tanzanite ring. We are not ready financially to get a diamond ring, so his grandparents who I adore so much, gave him a three stone Tanzanite ring with diamonds in between. His grandpa bought it for his grandma in England. I knew I wasn’t going to get a diamond before he proposed because his grandparents mentioned to both of us that they had a ring to give us. I’ve gotten a lot of people who are confused to why my engagement ring is not a diamond (it has diamonds on it!!).. I had a coworker say “that’s the engagement ring?” I went outside afterwards and couldn’t help but cry. I know how hurtful it is to hear people talk about your ring but you just have to remember that it doesn’t matter what they think. It’s your ring, not theirs and it’s perfect to you. People are so fixated on the ring that they forget the most important part of all this, I’M ENGAGED. I’M GETTING MARRIED TO MY BEST FRIEND. Why does anything else matter? Here is my gorgeous and special ring!! Enjoy your Ruby!!

MrsBuesleBee:  Thank you so much!! I don’t think i’ll ever upgrade it to a diamond, even if we are ready to do that. My wedding band from my grandma has diamonds all the way around, i think my engagement ring on top of that will look beautiful. 🙂

I’ve been married 16 years and my hubby recently bought me a tanzanite ring to wear on either my right or left hand. I’ve started wearing it on my ring finger with my wedding band. I absolutely love it! It’s not something I would have chosen 16 yrs ago as I think it’s almost expected that we have to have a diamond as out center stone. My tastes have changed, and I wear this more than my original ring now. Gemstones, ( esp rubies ) can run as much as a diamond or more so it’s unfortunate some people don’t share in your excitement or even recognize that your ring IS an E ring. My tanzanite cost 4 times what my original ring cost so diamonds are not the be all and end all! Get what you like, regardless of what others say!!!!!
