Hey guys! I haven’t posted much on the ‘bee because I’ve been really busy (spent a week and a half at my parent’s house, went on vacation with SO, my last semester started yesterday). I’ve also been avoiding posting because I’ve been a little depressed about rings. Gemstone rings. This is going to be long.
The weekend before I went to visit SO I ran/walked a 4k with my parents (it was the Tap ‘N Run 4k and it was mostly drinking beer and having awesome costumes and running just a little bit). It was really fun, and I was having a great time… but then tragedy struck. You see, my SO gave me this lovely aquamarine from Kohl’s for my birthday in February. I hardly ever took it off. When I finished the 4k I looked down and noticed the center stone was gone. I started bawling, but thankfully I had a sweat rag I could cover my face with and scream in. My mom and I were the first ones of our group to finish the race, so I had a little time to recover before everyone else showed up. My mom managed to beg out of post-run partying for my parents and me, and when we got in the car I could finally let it all out.
(Sidebar: I knew the prongs were loose. I had just gotten my ring cleaned earlier that week at a jewelry store and asked about tightening the prongs, but they said they would have to be redone. SO and I were going to take it in when he got back home from his internship.)
As soon as it happened I took a picture and sent it to my SO. I told him what happened, and he felt terrible for me. He kept telling me it wasn’t my fault and that we could replace it. The problem with that is that Kohl’s only sporadically carries it, and only online. I watched the Kohl’s website for over two months waiting for it to 1. wait for it to show up and 2. wait for it to go on sale because it retailed at ~1k. So unless we got really lucky I would not just be able to go exchange it for a new one.
The next day my mom and I went to Kohl’s to see what they could do. SO e-mailed me the receipt, so we took it and the ring in and explained what happened. The nice lady at the jewelry counter told us we could exchange it for equal value of what we paid or we could return it for a full refund. I decided to see what they had that matched the $400 we actually paid for it… and it was not much. I wasn’t surprised, since there was a $600 price difference between what it retailed for and what we paid.
SO and I talked about what to do. Even before we realized we could return it for a refund he said he would buy me a new ring to replace the one I lost. There was no point in keeping an empty setting, so we decided to return my ring. I’m still pretty upset about it. I know it’s just a ring, but I wore it every day and always thought of him when I saw it.
So now we’re ring shopping for gemstone rings again. When we did this in January it was a disaster, hence buying a ring online (that I loved). We’ve already hit up the jewelry store I got my ring cleaned at, but I’m so picky I only tried on a few rings, and didn’t really like any of them. I’ve been scouring the internet (especially etsy) to find some settings I like because I’m pretty sure the only way I’m going to be happy is if I design it myself.
I’m not really looking for any advice, but feel free to offer it up. I’m still kind of bummed about my ring, but I’m lucky my SO is so thoughtful and willing to work with my annoying pickiness.
Here’s the stock image of my previous ring, what it looked like in real life, and the empty shell:
