@beachbride1216:  I thought the same about not being able to find him guilty of second degree murder but once the defense was barred from entering any information about Trayvon’s history, I thought they may get that verdict.  Who knows?  It will be interesting.  And yes, they should prepare for riots if he’s acquitted.

@NJmeetsBX:  I think the defense has a good argument regarding the “beating” Zimmerman took.  But it’s very clear that had Zimmerman stayed in his vehicle that night as instructed by the police operator then Martin would still be alive.  So there is some culpability on Zimmerman’s part there.  Plus, the autopsy report shows Martin was shot straight through the chest which doesn’t indicate much of a struggle to me (it’s perfectly placed in a killshot.)

In contrast, another murder trial (College Park murder) that recently concluded in Orlando had testimony that the defendant and victim struggled with the gun before it went off.  The positioning of the bullet wound in the cheek matched up more with the defense’s secondary argument of a struggle than the defense’s primary (weaker) argument that the victim tried to shoot himself in the head.

The gun culture in Florida is still very conservative so it’s going to be difficult to seat a jury that thinks Zimmerman had zero right to carry a concealed weapon on him that night.  The main issue is going to be how the jury interprets what happened from the time Zimmerman exited the vehicle until Martin was shot.

It’s not a mistake that the defense leaked all those drug/weapon-related photos and videos of Martin, knowing that they would not be permitted as evidence in the case. This whole thing is kind of a giant #$(%show. So sad.

@gelaine22:  Pssh. So as a completely different minority I should keep quiet too, I suppose. 🙁 Guilty.

Why is this trial such a big deal? People are shot and killed in all sorts of incidents that aren’t publicised all the time. Why is this one different?

I used to teach a kid who looked exactly like Trayvaun Martin.  It jars me everytime I see his picture.

I also don’t know how they’re going to choose jurors.  The people who are likely to be impartial are also likely to know nothing about anything at all.  =(

@FauxBoho:  It’s a racially charged incident because the shooter is a Hispanic male that looks white and the victim is a 17 year old black male that was wearing a hoodie the night of the incident.  Additionally, Sanford, FL, has a long history of racism with it’s police force and justice system.  Initially, Zimmerman was not arrested or charged with a crime because the police determined it was self defense.  However, after the media got involved and the public outcry got loud enough, Zimmerman was arrested and charged with second degree murder.  These types of cases rarely turn out well.

It’s difficult for me to wrap my head around the self defense argument because Zimmerman was in his vehicle driving through the neighborhood when he spotted Martin.  Zimmerman then pursued Martin in his vehicle and called the police hotline (not 911.)  During the call, Zimmerman lost sight of Martin and the operator instructed Zimmerman not to follow Martin.  Zimmerman parked and exited his vehicle and went looking for Martin.

Then, per Zimmerman, Martin attacked Zimmerman and a struggle ensued, they struggled for the gun, and the gun went off killing Martin.

Zimmerman was safe in his vehicle and had no business exiting it to look for Martin.  It was possible that Martin was frightened by being followed by Zimmerman and reacted by attacking him.  However, again for me, the placement of the gunshot seems too perfect to have occurred in a struggle.

@beachbride1216:  Is it because Zimmerman looks white that it’s a problem & would be less of an issue if Zimmerman actually looked hispanic?

I just looked them up and Zimmerman looks hispanic to me.

Edit: Just saw your 2nd post. Sounds like Zimmerman had a hero complex and took down an innocent teenager 🙁

@FauxBoho:  Yeah, it’s particularly outrageous (and thus note-worthy) because A) Zimmerman and his gun tracked down an innocent but black kid after the police told him not to, B) that kid got shot and killed, and C) Zimmerman intially was not charged with any crime.  That all adds up to a collective WTF?!

@beachbride1216:  Did Zimmerman say there was a struggle for the gun?  I didn’t know that.  I thought he just said he shot him.  I agree with you it’s going to come down to details that are not available and what the jury deems reasonable to assume about what happened once ZImmerman exited the car.  That can go any way.

@FauxBoho:  I’m interested in this as well. I’m in Canada so I don’t think the coverage was quite as extensive up here… but gun violence happens all the time. I don’t understand why it’s racially charged. I’m genuinely ignorant on the subject and would like to be informed.

@NJmeetsBX:  “It will be impossible to get an impartial jury.  The case has become too much of a sensation.  He will be found guilty or plead out before it’s all said and done.”

You’d think but the Casey Anthony trial was the same way and look what happened there …
