Gatlinburg/pigeon forge area is lovely. Great white water rafting in summer, hiking and views.

I definitely second Gatlinburg Tennessee it’s one of my favorite places, beautiful veiws, hiking galore, tons of shops and restaurants. We like to Stay in a cabin up on the mountain but if you stay at a hotel in town you can walk pretty much everywhere! If you want more city, Airbnb on the Tennessee river near Chattanooga and drive in to town for all the food aquarium etc. Helen is nice, much more tucked away smaller scale than the other places, tubing is relaxing there when the water is high.

I live in Asheville and the food scene is so amazing right now, the downtown is very walkable and fun but definitely not much of a “party” scene. There’s southern food and lots of tapas bars that create a really nice array of options from bbq to vegan. I would 100% recommend!

Ooh! I live in Tennessee! Chattanooga is fun for an overnight or weekend trip for the aquarium and restaurants, and you can walk to just about anywhere downtown. I personally enjoy it as a day trip or overnight trip. We actually celebrated our three-year anniversary in Gatlinburg back in October, and we got a good deal on the Bearskin Lodge in the downtown area. It’s easy walking access to all sorts of shops and restaurants, but be forewarned that there’s a lot of cheesy tourist-y things as well. We had a blast playing mini-golf and generally being goofballs, but be prepared for traffic, crowds, and tons of classic tourist attractions in the nearby Pigeon Forge area as well. But the scenery is stunning, the Smoky Mountains are gorgeous, and it’s super fun taking a cable car to Ober Gatlinburg.

If you want something a little less crowded, Johnson City has more of a small town feel with plenty of amenities. It’s grown a lot in the past few years and has awesome restaurants in the downtown area, live music venues year-round, trivia nights, a bustling craft brewery scene, and easy access to tons of outdoor adventures at state and city parks. I actually live really close to Johnson City and love the area! Plus it’s just over an hour to Asheville, which also has a great shopping/dining/etc. scene.

Before you mentioned Asheville, that was exactly the city I was thinking of! Lots of food and quirky shops. If it were a little later in the year, I would recommend checking out a play with the Montfort Park Players (free Shakespeare in the Park where you can pack a picnic, wine, bring doggies, etc.) The Pisgah National Forest and the Nantahala National Forest are close by too.

Chattanooga is also amazing. You have to see the aquarium, the Bluff View art district, Chickamauga battlefield, and there’s plenty of hiking and kayaking on the Ocoee if it’s warm enough.

alohakay :  As far as NC, I would recommend the outer banks. It’s like a mile long stretch of island with really pretty beaches and lighthouses. You have to drive your car on a ferry to get there, so it’s a pretty fun little day trip!

Asheville is a good choice if you’ve never been there, though I’m personally not a fan.

If you want NC mountains I’d go Brevard 🙂

Cumberland Island GA (may be too late for reservations)

North GA for hiking (Toccoa area)

Wilmington/New Bern NC (coastal)

Beaufort, SC is one of my favorite places. It’s tiny but oh so cute and you’re right between Savannah and Charleston.
