Should I expect to receive a marriage certificate back from the courthouse after getting married? We dropped our signed license off at the courthouse in person the day after the wedding (one month ago) and haven’t gotten anything back yet. I need a certified copy to change my name but don’t know if I should still be waiting on it to show up in the mail or if I need to actually order (and pay for) a few copies.
I know this varies by location. We got married in Maryland (Baltimore City, specifically). I’ve gotten no response on the local board so I thought I’d try here. I appreciate any light you’re able to shed on this!

We had to go and pick ours up. They didn’t send us anything back.

We got ours in person — we dropped off the signed copy and got certified copies at the exact same time. They never mailed us anything.

Can you give the courthouse a call? Someone there should be able to tell you if they mail them back or if you need to pick them up yourself.

@nanilani04: We moved from Texas to North Carolina the day following our wedding, but when we went to actually get the marriage license, they asked for the address we wanted it mailed too. Then when my mom took it after the wedding, she requested they give us some certified copies which she overnighted to us. We then got the actual original certificate a week or so later.

We delivered our license in person. It took about five minutes and we had a recorded official license + three official photocopies because my husband is military. I always imagined you had to do it in person.

I got married in Baltimore also. You either have to submit a request in the mail with payment or go in person.

I’m sure it depends on the state/county/city that issued the license. We actually were able to keep the original, and the pastor just had to mail a copy of the multi-copy form back to the governing jurisdiction that issued the license/certificate.

@hartmamp: Thanks! I didn’t want to send in my request and payment if our marriage wasn’t recorded in their system yet, but now I know that should be the next step.
@Brielle: We kept our original license also (the pretty one), but that one isn’t accepted by SSA, etc 🙁

Ours was sent back! It took two months, I think!

- Wedding: October 2013 - Vine Street Church
We took ours in person on Monday after getting married on Saturday, and they gave us three official copies for our records that day, so I’ve already changed my name with the state and country, yay!

@nanilani04: I had to go to the court in person and pay for the certified copies. The
pretty certificate “is worth absloutely nothing. Frame it or do whatever you want with it” according to the court clerk lol.

@thejucheidea: Oh wow, that is fast! It never crossed my mind to suggest Darling Husband ask for copies while we were already there (I was waiting downstairs with our unwelcome camera and coffees). I was glad to have an excuse not to change my name immediately, but now I’m ready and impatient to get that train moving!

We ordered our copy of the certificate when we went to go get the license. They sent it by mail, but it took about 3 weeks to get it. I was getting antsy, because I couldn’t change anything over to my new name (well, except for Facebook) without it.

I went and got mine. They were $10 or $12 for each copy.
