It depends on the state. The state we got married in requires the certificate to be mailed back (our officiant took care of this) and then within a couple of weeks they mailed us back the official copy. We also got a couple of extra copies of our certificate, mainly because it made changing my name easier.

Well, this is going to be a hassle! For any other bees out there in my situation and b/c the website of Baltimore City Court is terrible, here’s what I’ve found: The MD department of vital records will not have record of the marriage until approximately three months later, $12/copy. (Glad I didn’t go through with the online request here!) For a wedding that took place in Baltimore City, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate in person at the courthouse (cash or money order) or by mail (include both names and date of marriage, money order only), $5.50/copy.
This is not the answer I wanted to hear since the city courthouse is in a more inconvenient location (and comes with parking fees!), but it seems I am out of luck unless I want to wait it out a few more months.
