Currently, I am in my 1st semester of my 1st year of medical school. My boyfriend of 5 years just proposed this past weekend, and we are trying to find a good date for the wedding. This is where the frustration comes in.
1) It’s too late to put together a wedding for this coming summer break before 2nd year begins. So we are looking at 2014.
2) Our wedding is in Michigan, and we both have large families with many people coming in from all over the country. So it would be a safety concern if we held it during Christmas/Winter break when there would most likely be large quantities of lake effect snow.
3) Spring break is the last full week of March ( March 22, 2014 – March 30, 2014). However, exam week is the week directly before break, which wouldn’t give any time for last minute wedding details. And in Michigan, March is pretty cloudy, cold, and dreary.
4) Final exams end during the 2nd full week of May. However, 3rd year classes begin 2 weeks later. And most importantly, Step 1 USMLE Boards are in the middle of June.
I heard 3rd year is the worst time to have a wedding. But waiting 3-4 years is definitely out of the question. Right now I’m thinking May 24th, which is the weekend smack dab in our 2 wk “summer break” between the end of 2nd year and the start of 3rd year classes. I’ve asked my Student Services Director, but she basically just gave me a tongue lashing about how us students shouldn’t get married in the middle of med school, and “doomsday” predictions about doing it before Boards. If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

@sarah0509w: Wow, that’s tough. I think that is really your only option! Congratulations on your engagement and on being in medical school!

@sarah0509w: Well wait…When does your second semester start? Could you have it in August or September of 2013? Or do you have summer courses as well?

I know that this might not be your favourite option, but do you need to have a big 200 person wedding with a huge dinner and dance? A smaller wedding might be more economical and easier to plan and fit into a short break.

My fiance is getting his PhD so he is also very busy in school and his advisor/lab director told him before he even proposed to me that he “better not get married whie he is still in school”. I couldn’t believe he would even say something like that. My fiance did not care though, he proposed and we are getting married next summer. I think you are right on the money with your date. It gives you some time between classes to have your wedding with the least amount of stress possible given your situation. Congrats! Just make sure your fiance helps with planning so it takes some of the stress off of you 🙂

@sarah0509w: as a current 3rd year medical student, i would HIGHLY suggest not having ur wedding a few weeks before you take step 1. if there was anyway to take step 1 before you get married i would suggest that (my friend actually took her step, got married 5 days later, and honeymooned for a week before the start of rotations in 3rd yr)
would you be willing to wait to between 3rd and 4th yr? that would probably be the most ideal time

It’s not actually too late to put something together for next summer, if you’re willing to consider a short-and-sweet engagement. We got engaged this past February and were married in September.

One couple during medical school got married during the winter break and had a New Years wedding. Most got married the summer after 4th year before starting internship.
You say 3rd year rotations start 2 weeks after May and Step 1 is in the middle of June? So you’re starting rotations while having to study for Step 1? That’s torture…

@mimi8325: Agreed, Step 1 is the most important test you will ever take in your life. Don’t let a silly wedding get in the way of your study time. jk 😉

I cannot really help out advice-wise, but it is good to know that we are not alone: I am a first year who got engaged this summer as well!
Due to family reasons, next summer doesn’t work. I will be attempting to take step 1 in early june, get married out of state on june 19th, 2014, then return home in time for MS3 (at my school we have summer off from late april until early july). We are going to postpone our honeymoon until whenever I have time in third year.

DON’T DO IT shortly before step one. Either plan something quick for this summer if you can with your current workload or wait until after step one.
