I don’t think it matters? You change your name with Social Security, doesn’t matter where. You’ll need to change your drivers license in CA.

California, I believe. I’m getting married in Vermont but live in CA, need to change my driver’s license, etc. where they were issued (CA DMV).

California. You’ll need a copy of your marriage license from the state of NY so you can then take it to the social security office to get your new social security card issued and they will provide documentation to take to the DMV to change it there.

Agree with PP’s, you change your name in whatever place you have documentation to change it on. It’s not so much that you change your name with the state itself – you change it with the DMV because that’s who issues the driver’s license or ID card. If you had a driver’s license in both states for whatever reason, you’d change it with both DMV’s. But before you can change it with the DMV, you have to change it with social security. You’ll need copies of your marriage certificate in order to make these changes.

Then you change it on all your other accounts – utilities, bank, insurance, etc – and with your employer. You should also re-register to vote under your new name (I actually forgot to do that for years, but they don’t check ID at the polling place anyway, haha).

wedo016 :  You start with Social Security and once you get your new card you go to the CA DMV to change your license then from there you to the bank, your credit card companies, etc. You can go to a Social Security office in any state, but to me it just makes more sense to do it when you get back home to CA.

Not all states require you to change SS before driver’s license. Either way, update in the state where you live.

wedo016 :  the answer is really “both”. on a NY marriage license, each party states what their name will be post-marriage. so on the license, you would put your new name. then, when you get back to california, you’ll use your copy of this license, complete with new name, to go to the DMV, etc to change your name on your state issue IDs.

fwiw, i live in NY and am familiar with the NY marriage license.

wedo016 :  no. in NY the name change option applies to your surname only. if you want to change your first or middle names, you have to go through a different office from the marriage divison. regardless of what you decide to do about your first/middle name, if you intend to change your surname, you should do so on your NY marriage license.

Take your NY Marriage License to Social Security in CA. Change your name. Then go to DMV in CA, change your name. Wah-lah!

Another option many people chose to do, go to Vital Records Office in CA and get legally married in CA right before the wedding to save yourself any headache (though there really shouldn’t be one). I know a lot of destination wedding couple who chose that route for some reason.
