(Closed) Getting motivated to lose lbs. Tips/advice?

I’m also looking to lose 30lbs. I’d stick with myfitnesspal, try calorie counting and light exercise and slowly take it from there 🙂

I’ve tried Slimming World and My Fitness Pal. For me personally, My Fitness Pal works the best, for a few reasons:

I can cut back some days, and allow myself a ‘splurge’ day once a week, so I can have a few drinks etc. This gives me something to look forward to.

It has educated me even more about food, and now, I think twice about what I’m putting in my mouth, and find I make healthier choices. When you put a slice of take-out pizza in at 350 calories, it’s a shock: I think ‘I could have a grilled chicken breast and huge salad for less than that!’. I’;ve found I’m drinking less, and I rarely get take-aways; and when I do, I make healthier choices (eg chicken shish kebab, with a small amount of extra-light mayo and loads of salad, at 430 calories, rather than half a pizza at like 1800!)

It’s easy to record what you’re eating, so there’s no escaping/lying to yourself about what you’re eating.


I didn’t have a huge amount to lose, and wanted to lose it slowly; I was 144 pounds at my heaviest, and shifted 18 pounds in about 3 months eating 1500 calories a day, dropping to 126 pounds. I then maintained this for about 6 weeks, by eating about 1800 calories a day, and since then, have lost a further 6 pounds, and am now at 120 pounds, and planning on maintaining this.

I also love that you can add exercise in (do be careful though; eg their swimming one isn’t accurate as calories burned depend on your weight; because I’m small, I burn less than they say I do, and if you’re much bigger, you’d burn more); it’s educated me more about the benefits of exercise and I’ve become much more healthy. I also use it as a way of ‘earning’ a treat eg if I’m going out for dinner, I will walk very very briskly to the pool (3 mile round-trip, up-hill) then do an hour of swimming, burning off around 700 calories in total. This then allows me to have a bottle of wine/pizza without going over my calorie allowance.

Another thing I did was tape a picture of myself at the weight I wanted to be to a cupboard in the kitchen, so that when I’m in there, I look at it and it makes me think twice about having that extra biscuit! lol

@Pupperoni:  I’ve never tried WW.  I did use MFP and dropped 30lbs.  I changed from MFP to LoseIt! because I felt like it had a better database and it has groups/communities that help keep you motivated. Now i’m down 63lbs and still losing. 

I perfer calorie counting, personally. Maybe its from where I went to a nutritionist when I was younger, but it makes me a LOT more aware of calories and such.  So that way when I’m not so much counting calories later, I’m at least thinking wow thats a lot lol.
