Use a thick, clear polish to strengthen them, that way they shouldnt break or peel as easily!

Eating healthy and drinking lots and lots of water really helps. Sally Hansen used to have a nail fortifyer that worked really well for me when I had problems with my nails. I say used to because I haven’t bought any for awhile. Now that I eat healthier and drink more water, I don’t need it anymore.

The only product I ever tried was Avon’s nail strengthener, and it’s HORRIBLE!  It made my nails much worse than they already were.

Prenatal vitamins! Plus your hair will also benefit.

I second hitchedinhawaii…prenatals will make them grow stronger – since I’ve been taking them, my nails don’t break and peel like they did and I can grow them way longer now since they’re not breaking off anymore. You have to give it time though since they grow from the bottom up and it can take a good 4-6 months for your nails to grow out completely.

I swear by Nailtique. This is the product they use at all the nail salons for manicures and also when someone gets acrylic taken off. You can buy it at Walgreens if you have one near you or check out a local drug store. It is $20 a bottle but it well worth it.

This might be stupid but ir works for me.  I always heard that tapping your nails makes them grow longer and faster.  I tap mine on my desk all the time and I swear it works!

I’m sure no one will even respond to this comment b/c it sounds so strange, but when I started eating more sushi (raw fish like tuna and salmon) my nails started to grow like crazy. That’s never happened to me before, they’ve always been short and brittle.

I would also say that filing regularly will help them not break off as often.

FISH OIL. It’s the TRUE secret. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and my doc put me on fish oil to see if that would get it down. i didn’t know one of the side effects was STRONG, LONG, BEAUTIFUL nails. But I’m glad it is. If you take fish oil for 30 days, you’ll see a difference. It also made my hair grow!

Fish Oil (or more rich omega-3 fish in diet) does help.  I couldn’t keep with it because of the dreaded “fish burps”.  Too Much Information, I know.  I switched to prenatals and always keep a few coats of clear polish on my nails.

Anyone got some tips on nail tip whitening?  I heard lemon juice works, but I’m worried about weakening my nails again from the acid content.

@moderndaisy: actually I think its because of the oils in the fish just like taking Fish Oil pills.

I used prenatal vitamins for months and my nails were AWESOME by my wedding! And then we went on our honeymoon and Jamaica is so damn humid that my nails grew ridiculously fast!

I second Nailtiques – Formula 2.  Just brush that on every few days and you should notice a difference.  It’s a bit pricey, but totally worth it!!!
