I don’t see a problem telling him you want to be involved in the purchase of the ring.  Especially if you can save 50% off the cost.

If you’ve already talked about it and went shopping, I dont see it being a big deal.

You’ve already had the ring discussion so go right ahead. An engagement ring is a major, longtime purchase, so it shouldn’t be shrouded in mystery.

If you’re going the Etsy custom route anyway, I recommend seeing if the jeweler would work with stones that you send to him and then look at some of the loose diamonds listed on Etsy. If you are not hung up on clarity you can get diamonds for suprisingly affordable prices, and there are blue ones too. Some of them even have inclusions that are pretty, like I’ve seen one with inclusions that look like pink glitter and another where the inclusions look like gold glitter, they are gorgeous and so much cheaper than clearer diamonds.

c3lloninja :  I would just have a chat and tell him.

Just a note. Sapphires have a lower refractive index and need to be kept pristine clean to sparkle. You might look for a white/colorless spinel or go with moissanite. I have precision cut white sapphire earrings and have to send them into the ultrasonic every time I wear them or they kinda go flat. You can also invest in a good ultrasonic and make sure your setting has easy access to the bottom of the stones.

If you do go with sapphires, look for precision cut sapphires. You might get a quote from Pristine Gemstones. They precision cut and have a sister store with settings, although do custom, called Pristine Jewelery. They are lovely and their stones are really nicely cut compared to what most jewellery makers will use.

This is the utrasonic I use at home. I put a tiny bit of dawn (the blue origional) or blitz cleaner.

I have a white sapphire and I love it! We could have afforded a diamond, but I found this ring and fell in love. I didn’t even realize it wasn’t a diamond at first so I didn’t see the point in shelling out a couple thousand more dollars. (to be fair though I’m not a diamond/precious gem person, I prefer the overall jewelry design)

Anyway.. since you’ve already had the ring talk then I think it’s totally fine to bring that up with him, ESPECIALLY because you’ll be saving him money.

Since you have already looked at rings, I don’t see anything wrong with discussing ring quotes with your boyfriend. You and he are clearly on the same page about becoming engaged.

I vote to tell him what you want and ask him if he wants to get married? If he says yes, proceed to design the ring together! That’s what my fiance and I did and I couldn’t be happier with my ring. I got exactly what I want and he said he’s so happy I took charge cause now he knows I’m 100% happy with my ring. By The Way, I’m also pitching in to the cost of the ring cause I got exactly what I wanted and it was $$$$$ :p
