I recently ordered my Wedding Dress which was a different style from what I originally started looking at. It took some time to adjust my thought process to accept this new style but I finally went with the dress that I kept comparing all other dresses to! You’ve seen and heard it before, specially on those dress shows, where the Bride tries on a totally different style dress and falls in love with it.
Have you purchased a dress that was different from your original vision?

@Sherry-Lynn: This was totally me! I always thought I wanted to wear the big princess ballgown, but once I got them on, they just so didn’t feel like me. I ended up getting a fit and flare dress, and loved it! π

@Sherry-Lynn: This was my FIRST pick, but I couldn’t locate a store that sold it in Ontario:

I ended up with this:

I wanted either a mermaid or fit and flare lace dress. I ended up with a mermaid, but there isn’t a bit of lace on it. I’ve had to make myself stop looking at other dresses online, because I truly love my dress!

I wouldn’t say mine was totally different.. but I didn’t get the dress that I thought I would. They had some similarities though

@sn2bmrsmntgmry: +1. I was in the same area. I thought I would end up with a heavily beaded a-line gown and ended up with a more simple ballgown with a beaded belt.

One of the first dresses I fell in love with (via pictures) is VERY similar to the dress I ended up buying – illusion neckline, fitted, lace. So I didn’t deviate too far from my original vision, but I made sure to try on many different styles just to be sure.

I went in wanting an ivory lace dress with straps, similar to this:

And I ended up with this!

Not completely different, but stilll fairly different. Especially the color! And the fact that it’s strapless.

I basically bought a dress that looked exactly like the ones I was pinning (which I didn’t realize at the time), so I guess I knew what I wanted all along. It just so happened that I also liked it once I put it on. I did try some wildly different dresses just to make sure, but nope that one was it.

@pengoala:
I think it happens more times than not. Brides start with one style of dress and buy a different style. Its not like you go try on Wedding Dresses every year. Its not until the occasion occurs that allows girls to try on different dresses. When you fall in love with a dress, don’t let the original vision stop you from getting it! π
Thanks for sharing. π

@Sherry-Lynn: Ohhh, I can totally relate to this. I was 110% sure that my dress would be a fit and flare or mermaid, all lace, and NOT strapless, with a to-die-for open back.
Lo and behold, the third dress I tried on is a fit and flare — but no lace, corset back, and actually COMPLETELY unembellished, chiffon, strapless dress. I loved it. My mom and my best friend cried. But it was only the 3rd dress I tried on, and it was so far off from my original vision.
I had three appointments after that, and only made it to two of them. After that one simple dress, everything else paled in comparison. I decided to cancel the third appointment and instead go back to the first shop and try on my dress–because it wasn’t even worth continuing to shop until I knew for sure if that dress was as good as I imagined/remembered. And of course, it was even better than I remembered.
What I thought I wanted:

And what I actually got:

@Sherry-Lynn: Thanks!! I didn’t realize that satin was so heavy until I started trying on dresses and I’m definitely glad that I went with chiffon π

@Sherry-Lynn: Also, I wish I could wear a different wedding dress every day. haha. I see so many dresses (even now, two years after we got married) that I wish I could try on! I’m so ridiculous, haha. π
