Hi Bees – Looking for some advice.
My DH’s grandmother gave me a piece of her jewelry that she had been saving for me since before we were married. She is a very special woman and the thought really meant a lot to me. When she said she had a necklace to give me, I was picturing something antique looking or understated. All of the jewelry I wear is really delicate and I was hoping she would pick up on that.
The problem – To say it’s not my style is an understatement. I really, really want to like it, but I just can’t. She told me she bought it in Las Vegas in the early 80’s, and everything about it screams “80’s Vegas!!!” I know she’s expecting me to wear it, but it just looks awkward on me, much too big and blingy.
What do I do???

Is she expecting you to wear it for the wedding? Could you put it with your bouquet, or do something else with it? It’s so hard to pick out jewelry for another person :-(.

Oh no. That is a tough situation to be in. Is there any way you can alter it slightly to tone it down?

How often do you see her? I would just accept it and wear it every once in awhile to go see her. You don’t have to wear it everyday :).

Do you have a pic of it? Also is she wanting you to wear it for the wedding, or did she just give it to you? Maybe just let her know, while you really appreciate the gesture, you had something else in mind for your jewelry fro your wedding day and would find another way to add it.
ETA: DOH! I just realized your date already passed. I agree with jo.lee, just say thank you and put it away.

Yes, wedding already happened. Based on things she said when she gave it to me, I think she’s expecting me to wear it pretty often. We see her almost every weekend.
I don’t have a pic, but I can try to describe it.
The charm is a yellow gold sunburst around 2″ wide. In the center is a cluster of small diamonds that make a circle. Below that circle are three smaller diamonds that are bezel set in a row, and are somehow attached to the round cluster of diamonds with a fastener that allows them to swing 360 degrees around the center when you move. When it’s sitting still, it resembles a dog’s paw (bigger round circle with three small circles hanging below it).
P.S. I’m not a dog owner or lover 🙂

Well it doesn’t exactly sounds like an everyday wear kind of necklace to me. Did she wear it a lot when she still had it? Maybe you could say something like “It’s so special and beautiful I only want to wear it for special occasions…”.

I’d wear it out to dinner with her once or something like that…but you don’t have to wear it all the time =].
