I second Mrs. Wallaby’s suggestion on Secret Santa. My family isn’t too over the top, but my husband’s family spends more AND has a bigger family. We draw names for all of the adults in my husband’s family for Christmas and you get that person a $100-$150 gift. Everyone still buys gifts for the kids. They still do gifts for everyone’s birthdays (although oddly its usually cash, which I don’t understand–couldn’t we each just hold onto our own $?) but Christmas would cost much much more if we didn’t do Secret Santa (even if you have a low limit like $20/person).

Oh, another thing. Start putting money away for Christmas sooner rather than later so you aren’t scrambling to find extra cash once Thanksgiving hits. People make fun of me for saving/shopping early, but come December I’m not broke or frazzled.
