What about science kits? Art kits? Books? A magazine subscription (to something like National Geographic Kids, etc.)? Legos? Board games? Playdough or modeling clay kits? One of those little electronic pets (Fur Real Friends), if they love animals? I know it can definitely be trickier than girlier gifts, but there are plenty of gifts that would work for less girly girls!

@les105:  Could you get them Barnes and Noble giftcards, then a cheap paperback of one of your favorite books from childhood (or a classic, such as a Chronicles of Narnia book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc.), and tuck the giftcard with a message about how you liked the book inside? That would be a sweet gift!

One of my 6 year old cousins is more of a tom boy than a girlie girl, so I bought her legos for Christmas. Her mom said she loves them! I love the book idea as well!

I was a huge tom boy and at that age I was into sports, diy projects, beanie babies, movies…. If they play sports you can get something of that theme – a movie, shirt etc.

Or maybe a good board game?

my daughter is a tom boy.  She likes gaming stuff. DS, Wii – really big into the skylanders right now.  She also likes the art stuff: drawing, crafts, science, fantasy books…

@les105:  They’re reading distopian novels. The hunger games trilogy and the divergent trilogy are both awesome

We bought our 7yr old niece the “Doctor Dreadful Alien Autopsy Kit” off amazon for her bday and she freaking loves it. It makes little candies, but not in the girly ez-bake oven type of way. I was a bit of a tomboy growing up and I loved getting science and art kits and books or gift cards to bookstores.

What about Tinker toys or KNEX?  Building toys are a lot of fun, and I think those give you more leeway than LEGOs.

Or computer/ video games depending on what systems they have.  One game which is great for kids who like to make things is the Games Factory.  It’s an easy to use tool that lets kids create their own video games.

I was a tom boy when I was younger and would have been the most happy with money or gift cards. I know it sucks to give but as a 10 year old, it’s cool to get to pick out whatever you want. or take them shopping. It’s that age where you want some freedom and not to feel like a kid any more. just an idea.
