Our reader is a family friend who is also a pastor, so instead of a gift for him we are going to make a donation to his church.  We gave a gift to both sets of parents and grandparent- we got them an engraved frame with our names and wedding date.  We just bought candy from a local candy store for our ushers (the candy store is very well known and they are all from out of town).  We got bigger gifts for the groomsmen and bridesmaids.  I don’t think you need gifts, but they are certainly a nice gesture.  I think that anyone who is putting money towards the wedding (parents contributing, bridesmaids buying their dress, etc.), should really receive some notion of appreciation (at mimimum a nicely written note).

I’m always surprised by the amount of gift giving on Weddingbee.  I think you only need to give gifts to people who have spent money and/or significant time on your wedding (so bridesmaids who each bought a 200$ dress, an aunt who spent weeks DIYing your brooch bouquet, etc. ).  Otherwise, just return the favour at another time (stand them a drink, help them move, get a nice bday gift or something).

shorebride105:  Everyone involved in the ceremony (eg readers/witnesses/ring bearers) is already in the bridal party, with the exception of one of the readers, and so we’re already giving them thank you gifts.

For the reader who isn’t in the bridal party we’re just getting her a nice bottle of rose wine (her favourite) and a card. We’ve also upgraded her and her fiance (who’s in the bridal party) to a junior suite as a treat (though we’ve also done this with the other groomsman and the best man)

We are planning on doing gifts for the wedding party (BM, Groomsmen, ring bearers), and our parents. However, we do plan on giving small tokens of thanks to people who are helping us out with other stuff, like my FIs cousin who we’re hoping will be our reception MC and ceremony videographer (he works for a radio station in town), my friend who is doing our photo slideshow, and then if we decide on host couples.
