I’ve been having really good luck lately so I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s turning around…
Last night my hair dryer broke so I headed to the nearest store to pick up a new one. Standing in the aisle with me was a REALLY annoying little girl probably about 7/8 years old who kept saying, “O—M—G” to everything (the brushes, pony tail holders, etc) reeeeallly loudly and getting in my face to do it. No parent in sight. At one point she even went to a row of hair clips and starting taking them off the package and putting them in her hair. Then she walked right next to me. I was holding my purse and my cell phone was just peaking out. She reached INTO my purse and GRABBED my cellphone. I didn’t have time to react before the phone flung from her hand and landed on the ground. It must have landed just so and she cracked the face of my iphone. 🙁 All I could say was, “You broke my phone! Where’s your mom?” no apology, nothing, she just started to walk away so I followed her and found her mom.
Her mom was horrible. I told her what happened and the only response I got was, “She wouldn’t do that” I assured her she in fact DID and I was sure the stores surveillance cameras would prove that. I expected her to replace my phone. She told me, “I ain’t got no money” (meanwhile daughter had wandered off and I swear I could hear things being thrown to the ground 2 aisles over). I was so upset and frustrated so I just walked away and said, “maybe you should try being a parent and watch your daughter.”
Now I have to pay to replace my phone and I’m pissed at that mom. Darling Husband said I should have called the store security but I just couldn’t see doing that. The mom clearly didn’t have money and it wasn’t worth the fight.
This post is part vent/part what would you have done?

Wow. That is incredibly awful. I’m so sorry. I would be so mad I would probably file a police report, to be honest.

OMG I blame the parent….
Hope you have better luck for the rest of the week!!

Wow wth. You’re right you probably wouldn’t have gotten any money from her. Still, I would get security on her ass and make a huge scene, just to teach her a lesson that she is responsible for her freaking kid.

Yeah, if someone broke my phone, I’d call the cops. What a terrible “parent.”

I would have called the cops too. I also might have held onto my purse a little tighter though, too :/

I am so sorry. That is awful. Maybe you can get a kit to just replace the face of it. They make kits for some of the phones, they are suppose to be fairly inexpensive. Good luck either way.

I definately would have told the mom what happened and tell her to keep her kid with her. I probably wouldn’t have filed a police report, but she would have deserved it if you did.

That is horrible!!! What’s worse is the mom’s lack of reaction. Personally, I would have involved security just to drive the message home but I wouldn’t have gone so far as to call the police. Perhaps this is one of those “like mother like daughter” cases unfortunately 🙁

By the way, how do you call the cops if the phone is broken? LOL I know, it was just the face…
Anyways, I would have had the cashier call security and made sure the mother was held responsible for what the child did. What was she doing in the store if she has no money? Stealing? Teaching her daughter to steal? mmmm?

I’m not too worried about replacing the phone it was more I felt like there was nothing I could do. The mom didn’t look like the most respectable character and to be honest I was thinking, “I hope she doesn’t attack me” At the time I never even considered calling security. Now looking back I’m thinking of all these things I could or should have done and it’s driving me nuts!

@cora_123: “Hopoefully” you’ll meet her again…. LOL

I would have probably done what you did and depending on what day it was I might have made a bigger scene.
I had my IPhone stolen from me about a month ago, at least you still have yours! Lol

Well it’s over now..but I SO understand the feeling of “damnit, if only I’d been wittier, or said this instead!” I’d be livid if that was me, hands down. But I’d also be shocked, because nobody goes into a store and expects a kid to go into their purse and grab their phone… So I can definitely understand your reaction.
That’s so ridiculous though. If my moron kid (don’t worry guys, I’m childless) broke someone’s phone, I’d definitely be embarassed. One because I wasn’t watching my child, and two because my kid broke someone’s property.
Ugh, I feel bad for you!!

I’d file a police report honestly. Usually I am big on live and let live, but it sounds like this woman and her daughter behave this way because they can. Even if nothing much came from it it would be enough to hopefully teach them an important lesson.
