Ok so I went to sign up for a tanning package (just for 3 weeks so anti-tanning bed activists please don’t start your attacks!) and paid like $120 to lay in the second best level of beds they have and to add on a few upgrades. Honestly, I felt like this was a bit extreme to pay for 1 month of tanning, especially since my elite gym membership costs like 60% less than that >.< but they are the best in the area, so I bit the bullet. I’m not having to pay for hair or makeup (my BM’s are amazing!) so I figured, why not?! I laid for a few minutes in the most elite bed since I had an upgrade on my first visit and could see some light color and was pleased with my experience. BUT I went the next day to lay again and the girl working behind the counter asked me if 12 minutes would be good, and I was like “That sounds like a lot since I just started yesterday,” to which she replied “Oh no, you won’t burn!” “You’re the expert so that’s fine I guess.” At about the 7-8 minute mark, I started to feel like I might be getting burnt and then right around the 10 minute mark, I knew I was getting toasty so I stopped the bed. Well, long story short, I am SUPER red and I seriously look like I fell asleep on the beach for a whole day while slathered in baby oil! Not to mention I woke up yesterday morning and could barely move because it hurt so bad! Needless to say, I was a bit perturbed!
But here comes the best part…! An old high school friend, who I have lost touch with, except through Facebook, is the area manager for this tanning bed, so I emailed her to tell her what happened and she called me within 20 minutes of receiving the message. Ironically enough, when I sent her that message, she was sitting down to lunch with the CEO and Sales Director of the company and read my message to them! They were incredibly pissed that this happened and insisted on giving me free tanning (the most elite package and add ons they offer) up until the wedding! It also includes Mystic tanning if I want it, and some kind of hydro spa! I was floored! The most I was really hoping for was maybe a few extra upgrades to the best bed that supposedly will not burn you, but FREE tanning?! Shhyeah!! I honestly never make complaints about stuff like that and usually let it roll off my shoulders, but if you knew how burnt I am, you’d understand! Like I’m wearing yoga pants, a loose shirt and no undies to work today because the rubbing of the material hurts my skin so bad. I mean if this had been the week of the wedding, I would probably be really upset right now because this redness would not have gone away in time.
Just thought I’d share my tragedy turned jackpot with you gals! And once again, anti-tanning folks, please save your energy from attacking me for going to the tanning bed. I literally have not been in over 7 years because I think they’re very bad for you, but in order to get a little bit of color without worrying about orange stuff rubbing off on my wedding dress, a few visits isn’t going to kill me. 🙂

@SweetMelissa429: Well the good thing is you still have time, and now a free tanning package. Definitely drink tons of water though, you can dehydrate pretty quickly when you’re burned. Congrats on the free tanning though, that part is pretty awesome. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

@SweetMelissa429: Sorry you got burned 🙁 But yay free tanning! I’m an esthetician who happens to have eczema and FH has psoriasis so I’m totally OK with tanning because it actually helps both of us. Personally, I think it’s better to tan in a controlled environment

Wow, I can’t believe she thought you should stay in for that long! Ouch! But awesome ending. Hope you have better experiences here on out.

The title made me LOL. Sorry this happened to you!

Ohhh my gosh I would have laughed in that girl’s face if she told me 12 minutes, on my second visit!, was fine. I’m pretty fair skinned so I had to start out really slow when I used to tan but damn that’s a long time for the second visit…and in the highest level bed at that!! Geez, I hope the manager has a talk with her about that. Anyways, congrats on getting a crap load of free stuff. Isn’t free stuff that absolute best?!
I know it’s bad for you but sometimes I miss the tanning bed. I was never addicted but it helped make me look less like a ghost lol. Unfortunately my plastic surgeon told me I can’t tan anymore because he found a pre-melanoma a few months ago…so that means no sunshine for me (without sunblock) whether it’s in a bed or outdoors 🙁

Great end result! Aloe is always good for burns too 🙂 And I’ll be doing the same thing – I’m obsessive about wearing SPF 30+ every day, but day glow white just isn’t going to work for the wedding. UV exposure without SPF for once in my life won’t kill me!

hope they retrain the girl. 12 minutes in a bed for a “first timer” is really long especially if you are fair skin.. i do 7 minutes, then 9 minutres then 12 minutes then 15 . and then i back off from tanning for months.

Haha thanks girls! Yeah the burn will fade away in a few days – I’m definitely keeping up with my H2O and keeping my skin moisturized – but the free stuff has definitely lightened my mood quite a bit 🙂
@IzzyBear: I was really surprised when she said that, too, but back when I was tanning the beds were more like coffins with flourescent lightbulbs in them and now they look like friggin time machines! So I just took her word for it…lesson learned right there o_O

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! If the hydrotherapy that they offer you is available now and you can bear it, go for it. Stay away from tanning until your redness fades. So sorry!

I love tanning && that is awesome! Good thing you said something!! && Very good thing it was not right before the wedding I’d be crying for you!! haha

dannnng getting burned is the worst! especially from a tanning bed! Did you go in a bed with only UVA rays (versus both UVA and UVB)? Those are the beds that aren’t supposed to burn you…but you WILL burn if you go in long enough! Free tanning until the wedding sounds like an awesome deal though! Just remember to take it a little at a time!

so, you got burned in a tanning bed, and to make up for it you’ll get MORE tanning sessions?

That is great everything worked out.
