I have relatively narrow hips- my measurements make me a pear, but the main difference between my waist and hip measurements come from a butt that sticks out, not wide hips. From the front, I look pretty straight-and-narrow but from the side I look curvier.
Anyway, I always thought this was a real disadvantage because of all those articles saying a small waist and wide hips are evolutionarily attractive, and essentially all hetero men prefer that. My W-H ratio is actually pretty good, but as I said, it really doesn’t appear that way from the front.
Since there’s nothing I can do to fix it, I had kind of stopped caring. But then the other night, SO and I were watching TV. he pointed to an actress with a very slender, athletic build and a waist that didn’t indent very much (kind of a typical ruler shape). He said, “See, that’s the kind of waist and hips I like- just a tiny bit of a curve, not too hippy.”
I had no idea he actually PREFERRED that shape, because all those articles I read make it sound like ALL men feel a certain way because of evolution, signs of fertility, etc. Are there any other girls here with narrow hips who have actually had it work as an advantage? I always thought it was a flaw, but I guess SO actually does not like big hips. Looking back on his exes, this seems to be consistent–I’m probably the curviest of all of them. I even showed him that “scientific” diagram of the girls with different waist-hip ratios and he chose the ones with hips on the narrower side.
Some people tell me that any man who feels this way is secretly gay (which is not the case for SO). Anyone else look like this, and know men who prefer it? I alway assumed it was a bad thing, across the board.

hmmm…I have to ask my guy (he’s sleeping now). But I’m essentially the same shape as you. Narrow hips, but I do have a butt…and boobs! Only one guy – an acquaintance years ago – mentioned my narrow hips. Every other guy I’ve dated considered the whole package or at least really liked my boobs and/or butt and did not comment on my hips either way.
I used to sometimes wish I had more feminine hips – I like the hourglass silhouette – but then realized that it tends to look better on those women that are on the slimmer side. And with narrow hips, I’d have more room to grow (not that I want to) without looking too dumpy (no offense to anyone).
I think most guys are either boobs or legs or butt men rather than specifically “hip” men, but I’m not a guy so…

LOL. I’m pretty straight shaped and relatively thin (size 2, 130 lbs, 5’4, athletic) not really any shape and my Fiance loves bigger girls. I lost 60 lbs and he tells me all the time that he liked me when I was bigger because now I have muscles but nothing to grab onto…we talk about girls he finds attractive and they are all plus sized with all sorts of goodies.

Well, I have a huge rack (I’m breastfeeding and was a 38DDD before birth) with a flabby tiered stomach, narrow hips and very little booty (it’s flat, kinda boxy and disappears alot, lol). I think I look like a sausage on a stick. Despite all of this my FH thinks I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread.
He loves ME and all I’ve got, regardless of what I think I’m lacking. You have to remember that men LOOK before they TALK. He was attracted before he spoke. Men have varying tastes and anything goes.
What I’m trying to say is if you have a meaningful relationship and your man wants to take it to the next level, realize that what you see in the mirror is what he wants.

@anon00: I also have narrow hips in comparison to my waist. My hips are 33 and my waist is 26. My husband and my ex loved the fact I am petite and pretty much straight up and down. I don’t care for it as much. I’d like either a smaller waist or bigger hips but God didn’t make me that way, so I’ll make the best of what I have.
