Hello ladies,
I’m wondering what to do about my first makeup artist trial.
I found a freelance artist on wedding wire who had rave reviews by 20 clients, and I noticed she was a preferred vendor for a popular photog. She is FAR more affordable than all other others I was considering.
I went for the trial and she was SO nice and spent more than an hour with me, talking me through the whole process. She was very clean and I loved how the foundation, blush, eyeshadow and eyebrow looked. However, I wanted to keep an open mind and we tried eyeliner and false lashes. Immediately, something didn’t look right to me but I couldn’t pin point it. She recommended that I go home and think about it or talk about it with other people so that I could be sure this was right for me (not pushy at all in contrast to other vendors like music!)
Went home and the fiance was like hmmm I dunno, your eyes look uneven and too dark (though he’s not used to me wearing any eye makeup)…maybe you should try someone else… Under the lights of my own home, I realized that the false eyelashes were uneven and they appeared longer on the right side and the eyeliner was smudging.
So…should the artist have noticed the asymmetry herself? Should I give her the benefit of the doubt that everything went well except the eyes? I now know I am not an eyeliner person at all, but I am traumatized by false lashes! (I accidentally ripped out a few natural ones when desperately trying to get the falsies off!).
Unfortunately the other artists trial runs are literally double her rate… Help!

I would give her your honest feedback from the trail. If you liked everything else then I would give it another shot with the eyes, and skip the falsies if you dont like them. If you arent used to wearing eyeliner, it can be really different/odd to see yourself wearing it. Also, like you said, it does need to be a tad bit overdone to see it in photographs. If anything, suggest a more brown color for the liner and have her smudge it into you lashline more- it will look more natural but definative. Good luck and just remember to be honest! I worked in the makeup industry for a few years and always appreciated honesty! Not everyone likes the same things on them!

thanks for the replying! i have black hair/eyelashes so i have never tried or even thought of brown eyeliner but will consider it now before i totally write off eyeliner forever. wish i had naturally long lashes but don’t want to worry about falsies on the big day if it’s already an issue on the trial!

what about using individual lashes instead of the strip? They are easier to apply, will hold better, and definitely look more natural. Maybe you can ask her to try to just apply a few at the very outside of your eyes to make your eyes appear larger. If you don’t like even that at the next trial, I’d say skip the falsies. But a few, appropriately placed lashes will make the world of difference in your look so recommended giving individual lashes a shot.
I def. think you should give her a second chance. It seems like all of the problems you had are fixable. Maybe you can encourage her to make the eyeliner a thinner line, which will look more natural while still giving you definition. It was probably hard for her to notice that the lashes weren’t on even since they weren’t on HER.
And remember, you are going to look and unnatural in wedding makeup if you dont usually wear makeup. That’s expected. But before and after your next trial, I suggest having your Fiance take some pictures of you in natural light so you can see the difference the makeup will make in your wedding photos. What seems dark to you will not translate that dark in pictures. Also make sure you keep the makeup on after your trial for a period of time so you can get used to yourself wearing that much makeup. Good luck

@krises – actually the MUA used individual lashes – short ones in the middle and medium length on the outer edge. they were a sort of tangled and shorter on the left and neat but too long on the right. i was wondering if other people experienced difficulty with falsie asymmetry with individual vs. strip lashes
im thinking more about DIY now because i’m worried about not having control over this on the big day! i do wear light makeup everyday and have gotten compliments even from random people about how it looks, but i don’t know how to do eye makeup other than mascara and was hoping to get pampered by someone who knows about makeup for photography!

I had individual fake lashes and it was fine. Brown eyeliner tends to be better if you don’t like a heavy look for your eyes. I agree to be honest with her and if she doesn’t appear to be approachable then find someone else.

it seems like she was receptive and since she had 20 great reviews, it means that the clients were probably very happy with the final results. I’d always advise people to try to work it out with the previous person and if it cannot be worked out, then go find a different artist~
