i went last week for my glucose test and the doctor called me today and said i need to come in for the 2 hour fasting glucose intorlerence test because my sugars were alittle over the limit. im just wondering what the chances would be that i could have GD and is there anyone that went for the second test and everything was fine?

The rule for my doctor was 140 and over had to come in for the three hour test (I think it might vary from doctor to doctor. I have heard of some cases where 130 and over is considered failing). Mine was at 143, so I failed. (I have heard of some cases where if you fail by that little, they will let it slide, but mine wouldn’t, so I had to come in for the 3 hour test).
I did a ton of googling because I was really upset about it. From what I found, women who failed both tests were the minority. (This is just based on message boards and google, this is not a claim for the general population). I only saw posts from a few women who failed their one hour and ended up having GD. Most of the posts I saw were from women who failed the first and then passed the second test.
Anyways, I passed every section of my 3 hour just fine. I can’t say it was the most pleasant experience of my life, but it wasn’t that bad. If you do end up testing positive for GD, there are some pretty informative posts about it over at Bee in the Pod if you want to check it out.

I have had several friends fail the first but pass the second test.

A lot of people fail the first test but are fine on the second test. Don’t stress yourself too much about it. And even if you end up with GD, its not the end of the world either. Happens to so many women and both them and their babies are fine.

I failed my first test, but passed the second. I was stupid and ate a bagel before the first, so I’m sure that’s why.

thanks everyone! i went to the doctor and they found ketones in my urine which my dr said is a good indicator that i have GD. so for now im being careful. they are also watching the baby doing non stress tests. i go back to the doctor on monday so hopefully things will be better.

My supervisor just had the same experience. She was fine after the 2nd test. Don’t worry about it, I think it’s pretty common to have to re-test. It’s just a pain, who wants to hang out for a couple hours?
