I dont take my first test until 30 weeks, so Im not of any personal help.  But I do know two people who failed their first test and did NOT end up having GD.  I know one who did have it, but mildly, and she just had to adjust her eating habits.  Minimal carbs and fruit with a lot of protein.  Sorry I cant be of more help, but dont lose hope yet!

When did you take your first test?

At the appointment they told me about it – my nurse asked me what I’d eaten for lunch (pasta and cake). She told me to wait and do it the next morning and make sure to not really eat much before it so that I wouldn’t “fail” it and have to do the 3 hour one. She said sometimes what you’ve eaten can make the results look like you’re blood sugar is higher than it should be.

Best of lucky to you! But just wanted to let you know that you can technically fail the first test and not really have gestational diabetes.

I know a couple women who failed the first and passed the second.  Fingers crossed for you!

I agree that I know women who failed the first but passed the second with flying colors

@colors: Yeah – carbs make your blood sugar higher so if you’re starting at an elevated level and then do the test it can give you results that are elevated more than they should be – so a bagel could definitely do that! Hope your next one goes better!

I failed my first one and passed every single section of the 3 hour one. Its easy to be scared but try not to worry about it too much. Good Luck!

For other tests similar to this I try to go on a very low car low sugar diet for at least 24 hours in advance.  My OB said to not eat anything 2 hours prior and really try to avoid carbs/sweets for a good 6 hours in advance.

I did the three hour and passed with flying colors.  I just ate regularly prior to the test so I could get an accurate result.  Please, please don’t forget to bring something healthy to snack on when you are done. When I finally left the place I almost passed out!

My SIL failed the first one, and passed the 3 hour one with both her pregnancies. The first time it was because she had the first one in the afternoon and had eaten a carb heavy b-fast and lunch before hand. The second time was because she was taking cold medicine that she thought was sugar free, but later realized it still effected her blood sugar for some reason. She was fine for the 3 hour one both times. Good luck! ๐Ÿ™‚
