What is a going away outfit? Do you mean when you are leaving the reception? I just wore my wedding dress.

Every wedding I’ve ever attended, the bride left the reception in her wedding gown.

@sailor:  I agree.  I’ve never (in real life) seen a bride change out of her wedding dress.  And I’ve been to multiple weddings in the South.

My parents actually changed into ‘going away outfits’ at the end of their reception, even though they didn’t leave for their honeymoon until the next day.  They did their last dance in the outfits and then left in the Rolls Royce (my grandparents rented it for them — but I digress).  My Mom wore a knee-length skirt and matching suit jacket and my Dad wore a different suit.  It actually was really neat picture-wise.

But that’s the only real wedding I know of where the bride and groom changed into going away outfits.

Edited to add: My parents were married on Labor Day weekend.  My Mom wore a light pink suit with an ivory shirt under the jacket and my Dad had a light grey suit.

I have a going away outfit for the next morning. All of our family is staying in the same B&B and we are leaving the next morning for the airport. So, I bought this little plane appropriate number:

I’m in the south-born and raised. Getting married here too, and i’ll be leaving in my wedding dress. Just like every other bride at every other southern wedding i’ve been to ..except my cousins new wife, who immediatley after the ceremony changed into cut off shorts and a white tank top..Kept her veil on though hahaha

I think the older tradition of going away outfits is some sort of nice, tasteful dress or suit that you can use on later occasions. Could be any color. I really do love those photos! Today, there’s a mix of reception dress/going away outfits, it seems, so the doors are wide open.

I bought a tea length white gown to wear over a blue petticoat to dance in after 10:30, and that served as my going away outfit. It’s up to you, but I’d suggest that if you’re planning it just as a going away outfit, make it something dressy and in a color you like to wear. If it’s a white dress/gown/outfit, look for a dyable fabric so that you can dye it and wear it to other occasions later. It’ll get more use that way, and you’ll have something wonderfully sentimental to wear to special occasions.

When I think of the perfect going away outfit, I think Bella in Breaking Dawn. (And I am not a huge Twi-hard either) I just love her dress. So elegant, sophisticated and classy:
