I’ve done that too, then one day this summer I started up my car, all sorts of lights, including the oil light started flashing and my car was making all sorts of dinging noises and what not, there was a nasty smell then my car died. I checked my oil (since the oil light was blinking) and I had like no oil in my car. I could have sworn I changed it las November/December but apparently it was the November before! Ops. Fiance got pretty mad at me for that one. In the end I just walked to the gas station at the end of the street, picked up a bit of oil to put in my car so I could get it to an oil change place. They did an engine flush or something because my oil was filthy dirty, so it was a little more than usual (plus I drive a VW so it needs ‘special’ [read: expensive]) oil. Your car is probably going to be fine, especially if you’ve checked your oil regularly and it’s been clean and at the right level. Some car manufacturers actually only recommend changing your oil at every X number of miles/kilometers rather than every 6 months or whatever. My service manual for my VW says that and I hadn’t hit the mileage yet where they said to change it, although when I took it in because I was still having issues with my oil pan after that oil change they kinda gave me heck for not changing my oil often enough….

I don’t change my oil every 3000 miles or 3 months, but I try to do it twice a year. I put on maybe 3000 miles a year though lol.

I think it is important to at least check, because if it goes low your engine can seize and it’s essentially irreparable.

I put an average of 20,000km a year on my car (lots of highway driving) and change my oil every 5000km.  If you don’t want the parts in your engine to touch eachother, cause friction, fuse, melt, essentily f*ck sh*t up, I recommend changing your oil every 5000km.  Honestly, it’s not worth potentially writing off a car, or having to write “lady driven” when you sell it.

I get this info from my hubby, who is a milwright and I’m pretty sure he knows what he’s talking about.

I wasn’t that bad but I jsut recently got my first oil change since December 2011. I had only put about 6,000 miles on it but still I was embarrassed. 😛

Unfortunately my car yells at me when it’s almost time for an oil change so I have to take it in otherwise it tells me “due for an oil change” and it’s annoying to read it every time I turn my car on.

Wow.  I get my oil changed every 3,000-4,000 miles, not risking hurting my beloved Lexus over something as simple as that.  You can ruin your engine, you know?

My car tells me when he needs an oil change, which makes my life a lot easier. Now that I’m driving like 3 miles a day, it may take like a year for me to need one!

I am so bad with keeping up with that too. I’m going to attempt that this month.
