I’ve just gotten engaged and have started looking for a reception venue in the Washington, DC area. Our guest list is going to be around 200, so it seems like hotels are among the best candidates for being able to accommodate us, but it’s so hard to sort among the (seems like) millions of hotels in DC! Does anyone have recommendations for ones that are especially nice? Budget is not a huge issue (although we’re definitely not at the level of the Willard or the Jefferson), and we’d prefer something with a bit more modern/open feel.

Perhaps the Hotel Monaco DC, part of Kimpton Hotels, a few weeks ago. Majority of Kimpton Hotels have a cool and modern atmosphere. That would be a place to start.

When I contacted the Hotel Monaco, they were super rude. I did get married at a Kimpton hotel (The Palomar), and it was wonderful…but not for 200 people.
I thought they were also rude at the W, but can imagine it would be a great place if you could rent the whole top floor – it’s amazing.
I’d also check out the St Regis and the Ritz/Four Seasons – they seem to have good wedding packages. I was impressed with the Ritz and 4 Seasons (same company) in what they sent me (per person price), but it wasn’t what we were looking for.
Outside of DC, I looked at the Pentgon City Ritz and they were very, very friendly and helpful. I’d recommend them based on my interactions even though, again, it wasn’t our style. It was beautiful, too.

I’m booked at the Mandarin Oriental DC and LOVE my catering manager, Dominic. You should definitely consider them.

Try The Fairfax at Embassy Row – its right near Dupont Circle and it’s this little gem of a hotel – it fits 200 – and the best part is you are the only wedding during the night…their ballroom is GORGEOUS!! High Ceilings – Beautiful Chandaliers!
