@Faythe: I have not personally purchased anything (YET), but there’s this online retailer called James Allen that allows you to see the actual diamond images. I am seriously considering ordering a smaller diamond ring from them to try it out. The reviews I’ve found online seem to be really good. Kay jewelers also offers the ability to build your own ring and to inspect the actual stone (picture). Good luck and keep us updated if you decide to order from somewhere! 🙂

Yep, I second jamesallen.com. They have some of the most reasonable prices I’ve seen. I ordered a right hand ring from them about a year ago. Goodoldgold.com also has photos.
