Is the cellist your only musician, or will there be any accompaniment? (I know the title says “solo cellist,” but you can have, say, a piano accompaniment to a cello solo and it’s still considered a “solo” because there is one lead instrument … you would have a fuller sound and a wider range of options doing that than if you just have a cello completely alone.)

One thing you might try is going to the media dept. of a Barnes & Noble, or another music store large enough to have listening stations, and grab a bunch of cello CDs and listen to excerpts for pieces you like.

A lot of standard violin repertoire can also be done on cello.

You might also ask your friend about going to a music store (the kind that sells instruments and sheet music this time, not a record store) and looking for some cello scores for pieces that would be within his range of ability.
