It’s been so exciting with all the engagements recently! So many people getting crossed off the list!
So my (secret)FI is back home in Canada and I am here in Ohio – After his proposal on Christmas which completely blindsided me, we decided we were going to be unofficially engaged (telling family only) until he could get his Grandmothers ring reset. I am so excited about inheriting a family heirloom, but the setting it is currently in could only be described as “Grandma Chic.” When we told his Grandmother we were going to get married, we thanked her for the ring and asked for her permission to get it reset, which she gave us. Whew!
So I’ve come back home with the mission to choose a setting, and I’ve told (s)FI about my choice…
We’re going to go from this:
To this Precision Set solitaire setting. (s)Fi’s family is from Texas and it’s a Texas based ring company. All of the rings are made there – that’s all I had to tell him and he was totally on board. 🙂 Gotta love his Texas pride!
(eek,,,sorry for the giant picture!)
I would have never expected to choose something like this, but I realized what I really love is the classic 4-prong solitaire look. I wanted some stones in the band, but didn’t want millgrain, so channel set appealed to me from the beginning.
Hopefully he’s going to order the ring soon…I’m not going to see him again until February, so I’ve got some more waiting to do!

Hehe “grandma chic” love it! That’s great news that you are getting a family heirlom! And even better that you get to design your dream ring! Can’t wait to see it all finished 🙂

Wow – the Grandma Chic is very art deco isnt it?
I have an heirloom ring, but mine is a little more modern now, it has almost come full circle 🙂 His Grandmother was expecting me to have it reset though!

That grandma chic ring is cool. Can you get a big CZ thrown into it (in amongst those diamonds!!)? It’d make a fabulous dress ring with one big rock in the middle there, and mark my words – it’ll be cool again some day soon. It’d also look fab with a coloured stone!! 😀
I bet it’d come up awesome with a clean.
I love the new setting too by the way. Congratulations!

I think you should do something with all those diamonds in her band, too. I know a girl who has a ring that was custom made from a bunch of smaller diamonds from other rings- If I remember correctly, her Ex-SIL had it made for her using some of the diamonds in her wedding set (which the girl’s brother had given to her Ex-SIL) as a “you don’t need anybody but you” gift. They were really close, and the ring is awesome, and I think it’s a cute story.
I think it could be really cool to have them reset into another interesting piece of jewelry (a bracelet, perhaps) that you could wear on your wedding day, or any other day, really.

@tinylittlebird: Thats an awesome idea! (s)FI and I had talked about possibly saving the baguettes for our children (or his sisters children) to make them a something with diamonds from their great-grandmother. I hadn’t thought of making anything for myself though! Since this ring is an heirloom and I will pass it down eventually, it would be pretty cool if there was another piece that went along with it.

@miss ranunculus: That’s a neat idea too! Also, clearly her ring had a ton of baguettes in it, so maybe you could still do both?
