Can you have your current employer send a letter of recommendation?

I was laid of in June and haven’t found a new job yet.  I feel helpless and broken.  I’m trying to get back on my feet but I am having a hard time.  I have unemployment until November and then I dont know what I am going to do.

I did work Lab Tech jobs but I lucked out and got high paying ones, the ones that I have gotten emails about are too far away for my older car to drive or they don’t pay enough to make ends meet.  The worst part is that the week I got laid off was the first week I was starting to save for this whole plan to get a new down payment on a car, and save some money for the wedding.  I was pretty broken hearted since they had just renewed my contract as well so I thought I was set for another year.  And just like every other temp job I’ve had the moment I started to get finacially solid is when they let me go.  It pretty much sucks and I am considering trying to bar tend or something as a side job but once unemployment runs out that wouldn’t be able to cover the bills either.

My guy barely makes enough to cover his own bills so I can’t lean on him.  I’m the one that makes more money because I have a degree.

It all feels pretty hopeless but that’s probably more so because I am so broken.  We are still planning the wedding as its going to cost almost nothing, our families are donating or giving us a lot of things for free.

@Firinne:   Because they’ve already offered to be a reference I would speak to them about it.  If I worked at the other company and I was making decisions having a letter of recommendation from the current employer would be a plus.

Believe me…I looks at resumes all the time and if I have one little thing that gives a candidate an edge I would jump all over it.  It very hard to choose sometimes.  🙂
