icepacks and painkillers!! I got all 4 of mine plus another impacted tooth out a few months ago. I slept for the first two days. But when I woke up I was completely nauseous and was vomiting everything I ate. So I had to be prescribed some meds. Hopefully you’ve got an SO, friend, or family member to help out. 🙂 Everything will be ok.

@losingfocus:  I was put completely to sleep!

I had all four impacted wisdom teeth taken out 3 years ago.  I don’t remember much about the procedure at all. The bits I vaguely recall were of the oral surgeon coming in here and there and putting in the stitches and checking on me.  I didn’t even know we had started!  I did have a total freakout when they started putting me under, my heart rate just sky rocketed.  Afterward, my face swelled like crazy and I don’t think I used ice!  I don’t believe I was told about that.  Vicodin was definitely my friend for the week!  The pain hit me hard about 20 minutes out of the office, on my way to get my meds.  I was almost crying and sobbing in Kaiser waiting for the vicodin to be filled so the pain could go away!

I agree with the other PPs, try not to get food in the sockets if you can!  It hurts real bad and is difficult to get out.  I was given a little syringe looking thing that I used to squirt water into the holes to help the food particles out.  I unfortunately had one dry socket. 🙁  That totally sucked.  Took longer to heal and had to go back for the special medicine they stick in there.

Other than the really sucky 2-3 weeks of recovery (for me), not having my wisdom teeth anymore is awesome.  I have TMJ, so the impacted teeth were contributing to my constant headaches and all my teeth shifting.

@bostongirl27:  Oh you’ll know… I got all 4 of my dry socket, and I was in the grocery store, and just FELL over in pain. It was like a thousand knives in each jaw..

WARNING: MY STORY…

I had all 4 of mine taken out, 8 years ago now? Freshman year of HS. I was put under general (i guess?) IV in my arm to put me to sleep. And first they couldn’t get my vein in my left arm. Got it in my right arm, but of course everything was set up for my left arm. I woke up and slapped it out. Back in it went… 3 more times. I busted out my vein in my hand, my whole hand bruised up, same with my arm.. My dad heard me wake up at the front of the office, and we were about 4 offices back.

3 days in, all 4 of my teeth dry socketted. It was terrible. I hadn’t eaten but ice and jello. No straws, nothing. I didn’t smoke, wasn’t on birth control. I was cleaning it okay. That clove gauze was disgusting. Irrigation was gross too…

@gogogiraffes:   said.  It’s EXTREMELY painful.  I didn’t know what it was though.  I just knew the bottom left socket hurt real bad and the others didn’t after a week.  So I figured something was wrong and went back immediately and found out I had a dry socket.  It got better once they stuffed stinky grass like medicine in the socket to help clot it.

@bostongirl27:  oh shit. not what I wanted to hear! I’ll be following your recovery – seeing all these ‘it took a week’ is not good – I was hoping to take of a thurs/fri (since I work full time at a bigkid job since I didn’t get this done during college >:() and was hoping to go back to work on a Monday!

I think a dry socket is when you dislodget the blood clot and bone/nerve is exposed. Hence the no sucking, straws, spitting, etc.

@gogogiraffes:  Is that what I think it is?  I hate cloves.  DH had to get a wisdom tooth taken out a couple of years ago, and the doc told him to bite down on a tea bag for a few minutes as part of the aftercare.  He said it was gross, but it has to be better than cloves!

@hisgoosiegirl:  I forgot about the no spitting part.  I had to rinse my mouth out several times a day with salt water and kind of just let it dribble into the sink.

@strawbabies:  They soak gauze in clove juice. I don’t really know WHAT it is. But just imagine sucking on a clove for a week straight, with a fresh one going in every day…

@hisgoosiegirl:  I was working full time and had taken Friday (the day of my procedure), Saturday, and Sunday off (I work weekends as well).  I THINK I went back to work on Monday.  I was taking my Vicodin and antibiotics at work.  Lol.  I told my boss if there were mistakes, that it was the Vicodin’s fault.  I didn’t take any other days off other than the first three for immediate recovery.  The other days I was at work and still recovering.

When I had mine taken out, it wasn’t so much the pain that I found troublesome but just the general oddness of it all. I didn’t want to eat or drink anything, I just wanted to lay there and whine like a hurt puppy. All the energy seeped out of me and I was feeling downright terrible by day two (probably from not eating anything). Finally my mom had the idea to make me some Vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast mixed with milk… it was like Manna from the Gods. Perked me right up. Tastes great, easy to drink, and has all sorts of helpful vitamins in there!

It def. took me time to recover though. I remember my then crush calling me on day three or four… and me desperatly trying to get him to understand what I was saying. I was so happy he called, but not much you can say when your mouth dont work no more! lol
